To tell you the truth, I had never heard of Roaring Pines until I received a topic request from a CHA board member to do an article on the building’s history. I fell in love with their concept once I visited their site link. Sorry I did not hear of their existence earlier.
In the mean time, I hope people enjoy the July CHA article on the Uneeda ghost sign even though it was rushed at the last minute and unfortunately it shows.
Did some quick research about the building early this morning and came up with the following that needs verified with records at the library. The problem is that the building falls inside the Union Hill Historic District. Part of their text in 2002 mentions the following:
” The Great A & P Tea Company occupied the first floor of 2025 Venable Street from 1923 to 1945. Mrs. M. E. Warren and her family (owners of the property) continued to occupy the second floor as they had done since 1906.”
The family may have “lived” there since 1906 but the building predates that quite a bit.
Actually Warren’ Grocery opened by Mr. John H. Warren and ran by his wife, was at 2025 Venable in 1889. Prior he was located at 2500 Q Street. Before the building was Warren’s, it was owned by another grocer named Edward Romeril and most likely built by him in 1883. Directory listings for 1881-1882 shows the address to be residential so most likely a double house sat there.
The building was up for rent in1940 while A&P there. After A&P left in 1945, Nu-Way Dry Cleaners moved in. By 1952 it became the Bethel Holy Church. Do not know its history after that without further library research. Above was done from home. Dates are probably correct but not verified.
To clarify, Warren’s Grocery was in the building c.1889-1922 and Romeril Grocery c.1883-1888
My husband and I walked over yesterday. What a delightful shop!!! Had a coffee and soda. We will be back! If you haven’t checked out this gem, I highly encourage you to do so!
OY. Seriously? https://www.yelp.com/biz/roaring-pines-richmond or https://www.roaringpines.com/pages/contact They have great pressed coffee drinks, but the vinegars are crazy good. They’ve been written up in every local mag and rag for ages. Support local, please.
Justin, right now 11-6 Tuesday through Saturday and 12-4 on Sundays.
Hey Neighbors, Drew from Roaring Pines here. Thanks for all the kind words and the support these first few months. Our hours right now, like Liz said, are Tuesday – Saturday 11-6 and Sunday 12-4. We’re working on getting a morning shift together as well for everyone who wants coffee on the way to work. Sooner than later.
RP is the best.
Weekend ice cream/shakes too?
Out of curiosity is there American grown coffee?
Hey Frank, The only state in America that produces coffee is Hawaii. Puerto Rico has a coffee industry as well if were stretching out to territories. Our hope with the coffee program is to highlight coffee roasters from around the country and how they are working with their suppliers. Right now we are serving up Verve Coffee out of Santa, Cruz. http://vervecoffee.com/pages/farmlevel
Had the Verve Coffee this weekend…it was delightful. Go visit Roaring Pines please. It’s the most unique and authentic retail storefront in RVA, hard stop. Lovely people.
