Urban Archeology Corp presentation this Friday at Chimborazo

A few weeks back, high school students with the Urban Archeology Corps worked with professional archeologists to dig into Chimborazo’s past. On Friday, August 19, from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM, all are invited to hear the students speak about their research and present unearthed artifacts.

This year’s team of eight Richmond Public School students will share their research on the complex history of Chimborazo and present a temporary exhibit highlighting the Freedmen’s Bureau School that existed at the site following the Civil War.

“I’m excited that the students will be able to share their interpretation of the Chimborazo site based on all that they’ve learned this summer from National Park Service staff,” said Giles Harnsberger, Executive Director of Groundwork RVA.

Over the course of the summer, Urban Archeology Corps youth received a stipend and performed in-depth research in the archives of the Library of Virginia and the Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site. They also learned about careers with the National Park Service through hands-on experiences including the excavation and interpretation of artifacts and the importance of stewardship.
