Fundraiser to replace car destroyed by random gunfire

The Peter Paul Development Center has word that an area mom needs help replacing her car:

A Peter Paul family is in need of urgent support! Last weekend, random gunfire resulted in what will likely be deemed the total loss of the Lucas family vehicle. The car is Ms. Lucas’s only form of transportation to and from her job in Short Pump. Without transportation to her place of work, this could be a tremendous set-back for her goal to move her and her two children out of public housing. The GoFundMe page has more detail:

On Sunday, October 16th around 11:30PM while Ms. Lucas and her two children slept, random gunfire erupted outside of the family’s home and continued for approximately five minutes just outside of their windows.

Ms. Lucas’ two children awoke distressed and fearful with concern for their mother’s safety and their own. This, and other recent violent acts in the community, have left the children traumatized and begging to move out of public housing.

As a result of this violent event, Ms. Lucas’ 2000 Honda Accord was riddled with bullets. Some of the bullets remain lodged in the vehicle’s engine. Because of the age of the vehicle, the extensive damage to the exterior and engine compartment, and the estimated cost of repairs, the vehicle will most likely be declared a total loss by the insurance company. This is particularly problematic because the amount the insurance company will pay out is much less than what is owed on the vehicle.

The loss of her 2000 Honda Accord is especially devastating to the family because Ms. Lucas requires a vehicle to get to and from her management position in Short Pump as well as extra-curricular events for the children, medical appointments, and family functions. A vehicle is necessary to commute to and from the City of Richmond to Short Pump, as public transportation is not available between these two localities.

As of this morning, $2,085 has been raised towards the $6,000 goal by 46 people in 2 days.
