Lock your cars, lock your houses
So, wanted to share: We’ve heard from some of our tenants on Chimborazo that on multiple occasions someone has knocked on their front door to see if anyone is home, then attempted to open the door when the tenant didn’t answer. (Presumably looking for doors left unlocked in hopes of an easy robbery?)

My car was broken into last week. I believe I left it unlocked. Nothing was taken, but there was nothing valuable to take. Monday night around 2am I looked out my window (27th and Leigh) and saw 3 slender (probably young) men in black hoodies checking car doors. A neighbor’s car was open and they began rifling through it. I set off my own car alarm to scare them away and called the police.
I suggest everyone keep valuables secure and double check that car doors are locked, especially at night. And please call the police if they see anyone trying to open car doors. I personally wish I hadn’t scared the looters off, because the police officers may have gotten a head start on them if I had called but watched quietly to see which direction they went.
TAGGED: crime
I’ve seen kids wandering down Chimbo looking into cars. Tis the season to help people make good choices. Lock everything up. Leave nothing in sight.
I truly do not understand how this is an issue in Richmond… I can see how someone might make a mistake to forget to lock their car or door and just be unlucky enough to get noticed- but is there a cadre of people out there who just refuse to lock their stuff up until they are robbed?
@Pedey
+5 points for working in the word ‘cadre.’
Hide yo kids, hide yo wife
In response to the folks who are astounded that people leave their cars unlocked: Is it possible these thieves are somehow picking locks and not setting the alarms off?
I’m on Clay one street east of Chimborazo and I’ve definitely heard our storm door slam when there wasn’t a delivery being made. Thanks for the heads up!
I can’t believe that adults living in an urban area have to be told repeatedly to lock their homes and cars. Are you really that trusting?
@Trish
Yes, adults living in an urban area need to be repeatedly told to lock their homes and cars.
You have to realize that there are continually newbies to the community, and all they see is the nice houses, parks and uppity restaurant scene.
I don’t think its that they are trusting, it is simply where they lived before they did not need to be as adamant about locking their doors because they did not need to.
Yes, people you need to lock your doors in Church Hill because your shit will get taken sooner or later…
The only reason these perps even come to the community is because there is continual opportunity (people leaving shit unlocked.
If everyone locked their doors, yes, there would be far less crime.
I live in the eastview community of church hill, and I have a neighbor who lives on the next block. She’s told me that she’s had her car broken in a few times.We live a block from Whitcomb court, and, unfortunately, this doesn’t happen as often on this side of church hill, considering that this is a high crime area.
