Joseph Watts House
701 N. 27th StreetBuilt in 1855, the Joseph Watts House is a Greek Revival in Church Hill North. Interestingly, the house was built in a style usually found much earlier and has fastidious stretcher brickwork. It was subsequently owned by William Folkes. In January, 1983, when Historic Richmond purchased the property to ensure its preservation, the original servants’ quarters were still located at the rear of the property. Today, a modern frame addition exists on the back of the house. The house and servants’ quarters have recently been well restored.

Both porch designs look good but they did a fantastic job restoring it back to the smaller one without obvious facial scars.
Our house, 407 N 27th, use to have a 2-story brick 4-room summer kitchen/servants quarters, a smokehouse, coal house, and a carriage house facing Clay street… and of course the store on the corner. Wish our out buildings were still standing. At least the winter kitchen with fireplace, is still in the basement with a door and stairs leading nowhere now, to a room for food prep before serving, where the current kitchen is now.
