Home invasion on Newman Road
02/08/2017 6:00 PM by John M
From Sector 111 Lt. McRoy via a neighbor on Nextdoor:
From: Lieutenant Johnny McRoy III
Richmond Police Department
1st Precinct, Sector III12:00 Noon Wednesday 2/8/2017
A home invasion just took place on Newman Road. The suspect is a young black male 5’5″-5’7″ with slender build, wearing a blue hoody and blue jeans. This individual knocked on the door, inquired with the homeowner about mowing the lawn and then forced his way into the home with a handgun.
If you see anyone matching this description please call 911.
Do not open your door to strangers.
Man offering lawn services robs Richmond woman at gunpoint

This guy came up to my front door yesterday on crestview and rang the bell. I got a notification from my motion camera and then a minute later he was on my back porch trying to enter my home. Seems to match the description, and he had walked up the hill from the area where this home invasion happened.
You can’t see much in this one (I have since repositioned the camera), but it’s only a minute later. My yard is fenced so he obviously entered the gate with bad intentions. Luckily he did not enter. I was curious why he even attempted this because my dog would have freaked out when he rang the doorbell, but if he had a gun….ugh.
Dang!!
What kind of cameras are you using?
They are called arlo. They don’t require wiring, and the batteries last a while. It also comes with a free app which is super nice. My complaint is that it has a delay…notice it didn’t catch the kid coming up the stairs on the back porch, and also only records in 10 sec clips. However for the price, I think they are def worth it.
It’s a really clear image.
Former Richmond mayoral candidate’s wife robbed at gunpoint during home invasion

This younger male came up to our house on 23rd St. asking to cut grass and/or do yard work
Wow. He looks so young. Do you think he has glasses on in this pic?
This is messed up.These guys would rather take your hard earned belongings that you worked for instead of getting up and working on their own.
I just watched the other clip I have where he’s just ringing the doorbell and he actually takes his glasses off, which would have been before this one.
This perp looks & acts on the young side. That can be a good &/or *very* bad thing. In my many years of living “on the Hill”, it seems the younger ones are quicker to violence when challenged. I *STRONGLY* recommend getting a “NEST” outdoor or some other brand of camera for your front (& rear) entrances and porches.
From the RPD:
Suspect Sought in Home Invasion
Richmond Police detectives need the public’s help to identify the male in the attached photo and video (video sent separately) who is the suspect in a home invasion and robbery yesterday.
At approximately 11:49 a.m., officers were called to the 1800 block of Newman Road for the report of a home invasion and robbery.
The suspect, seen below in a surveillance image captured nearby, is described as a black male, 5’5” – 5’7” tall, with a slight build. He wore a “Nike” brand navy-colored hooded sweatshirt with white lettering on the front.
The victim reported the suspect appeared at the home’s front door offering lawn services, but when declined, the suspect brandished a handgun, forced his way into the home, stole cash and fled on foot.
Detectives ask anyone with any information about this man’s identity to call First Precinct Detective Gaetano Drago at (804) 646-3395 or (804) 510-4182 or contact Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000, online at http://www.7801000.com or by texting Crime Stoppers at 274637, using the keyword “ITip” followed by your tip.

@Kevin: Saw the kid yesterday too, wearing a bright blue shirt if I recall correctly. He talked to another neighbor on 23rd, for a little bit, across from Union Market. After a few minutes I saw him crossing Jefferson and head southbound on 24th. I’d say he was 9-10 y/o.
FYI the video is great and all, and maybe it’s the same person, but the video is not of the house on Newman Street.
The police just released this as video as being of the suspect in the Newman Street incident
That is incorrect information, unless they know that it’s the same person. The video is not of the Newman Street house. Looks like they took it from Brittany’s post above, which she clearly states is on Crestview. That’s a pretty big leap to make unless they have other evidence.
No, they really did. I get the RPD press releases.
RPD release video, description of suspect who robbed woman at gunpoint in her home
http://wric.com/2017/02/08/rpd-release-video-description-of-suspect-who-robbed-woman-at-gunpoint-in-her-home/
The house in the video is not the house on Newman Street. The media coverage I have seen makes it seem like the video is from the actual house on Newman Street where the home invasion occurred. If the police press release says or implied that the video is of the Newman Street house, that info is incorrect. Maybe it’s the same person, maybe not. Putting out a video from one house and implying it’s from another house is pretty sloppy.
Here is the exact text from the RPD press release:

@Juliellen
No offense, but to be clear, the only thing SLOPPY is your misreading of the information above.
The press release from the RPD states pretty clear the video footage is from “a surveillance image captured nearby” and that he is a “suspect” because he matches the description.
The only reason I am making an issue of this is because its totally unfair for you to repeatedly post about the RPD releasing “incorrect” and “sloppy” work. Good way to attempt turn an informative post into an attempted RPD bash.
Daniel, I have no problem with the RPD, but I do expect them to have high standards and not mislead the public. The information was incorrectly reported by the media in multiple instances. NBC 12 clarified their info after it was pointed out to them. I do not know if the police clarified it or if their info was misunderstood and misreported by the media. Showing footage from one place and implying or stating it’s from another place is definitely sloppy, and could open up whoever stated that to lawsuits, not to mention mistrust within the community and misidentification of suspects. Since I live a block from the reported (not videoed) incident, I take it very seriously.
Thanks Daniel for posting this, I share your same thoughts. Juliellen, the post from John with the link to the news update says the video “captured the suspect.” I’ll add to that: for the police to say this is the suspect, the victim identified this individual from the video as her assailant, in some manner for them. The identification does not need to be made public to make a press release nor does where the video came from (being a private citizen’s video that could jeopardize the case/safety of the owner if made public because the suspect knows where he went but may not know who has the camera), so understand how things work instead of jumping on the legal system and how things are reported. There is a method to the madness….
So Juliellen, are police and media not allowed to use images captured from other locations to use for dissemination? Take the recent case of the Petersburg inmate that absconded from the Richmond Airport instead of reporting to the half-way house in Texas. They used an inmate photo but did not state that it was inmate photo. Does it really need to say where they got it? With your reasoning, aren’t you upset that they didn’t specify that the image used wasn’t from the airport’s security system? And somehow your logic is extremely flawed, unless you misspoke, but by overtly stating that the source of the image is indeed from another location, does not open anyone up for liabilities, in fact it would protect them from such an issue. Again, from my previous post, you nor anyone not involved in the case knows about the identification process of this individual. The victim from your neighborhood gave the police some sort of affirmation, whether presumed or actual, that the videoed subject is the same person. The police would not state this as fact if it wasn’t made a fact because it would torpedo the case if they didn’t positively identify the suspect from the home invasion as the individual in the screen capture.
R.–one more time then I’m out. Bottom line is that video was released of a different house but it was assumed and reported that the video was taken from the house where the incident occurred. That is false information.
@Juliellen
Thank goodness your out, because you made a lot of incorrect “assumptions” that kind of sabotaged this whole post.
You really should apply for a position at RPD, your detective skills are pretty flawless.
