Church Hill Market seeking ABC off
02/27/2017 12:23 PM by John M
The Church Hill Market at 1105 North 25th Street (not yet open) applied for a Wine and Beer Off Premises ABC license on 2/15/2017.
This store is 1/2 block north of Ocean Grocery, and one block north of 25th Street Market.

Anyone know anything about the applicant? Don’t want to make assumptions about anyone but would be interested to see a track record. The phone number for the applicant in ABC’s database has a Bronx area code although that doesn’t mean much anymore.
This is exactly what the community needed. Goodness knows that our neighborhood was an “alcohol desert”.
No!!!! It would be so great if this block reflected more types of businesses, not just corner stores!
Is there a way to stop this?
Greta, yes. File a protest with ABC. There should be an announcement in the paper , soon
Greta- you have 30 days from 2/18/17 to file your objection with the ABC as it was already advertised in the newspaper. Not much time left.

Seems like making assumptions to me… What did a Bronx area code used to mean? Poor? Black?
I question the motives of people who would reflexively reject this application. Has the Union Market selling alcohol been bad for the neighborhood? Mobilizing against this application seems like thinly veiled way of trying to keep certain “elements” out.
Admittedly, I love all varieties of convenience store.
We have worked with other licensee applicants in the vicinity like 25th St Market and Union Market to put reasonable restrictions on the license, if issued. If any of the neighbors in the vicinity of this spot would like some free advice on how to get it done, feel free to reach out to me

The above is the link where you can lodge an objection.
I specifically said that there are already enough places with an ABC license in the area. It would cause extra traffic in an otherwise quiet part. Also it would have a negative impact on real estate value.
Thanks, Joseph. Just filled out the form – super easy and only took a few minutes. Encourage others to do so as well!
Joseph, I understand if you don’t want another liquor store in your neighborhood but what does “extra traffic” have to do with anything?
It’s 25th street, the major commercial artery in this part of town. It’s supposed to have traffic on it! We want people to come down there.
Ilya,
That’s a great point! However, I don’t think an ABC license at a market is going to make it a destination for people to go to.
Perhaps if it was cleaned up some and offered dine in food options it would be more appropriate.
If the owner shows they’re willing to invest in the neighborhood (maybe do some improvements to the store) rather than just milk foot traffic with cheap alcohol, I would be much more in favor of supporting it.
I would also be much more willing to support it if the owner lived in the area.
@Don O’Keefe
Way to jump to conclusions. A Bronx area code means they are possibly not from Richmond. Could indicate absentee ownership. I think it would be better for there to be local on-site ownership is all. I would have noted it if the area code were Fargo. I also said it may not mean much anymore in the sense that people keep their phone numbers when they move so the owner may no longer live in the Bronx. Lighten up, Francis.
