Grocery store construction to start this fall
Leah Small at Richmond Magazine has a good overview of the new grocery store development:
But access and upward mobility are goals of a new plan: A proposed mixed-use development could bring a full-service grocery store, the J. Sargeant Reynolds’ culinary arts program, apartments and retail space to the neighborhood. Construction of The Church Hill North Retail Center is scheduled to begin this fall at Nine Mile Road, Fairmount Avenue and North 25th and 24th streets, with completion estimated near the end of 2018. It’s a food-centric infusion of job training and commerce that could give north Church Hill an economic kick start. It’s not so much a money-making opportunity as a chance to help alleviate poverty in the region, according to the project’s financial backer, Steven A. Markel, the vice chairman of the Henrico-based specialty insurer Markel Corp.
Finally…I am tired of shopping at that awful farm fresh
Agree. Tried to buy some decent steaks there once…The meat guy actually told me they don’t carry expensive cuts of meat because there’s no demand.
Ended up at Costco….sigh
And the parking stinks.
Maybe the Markels would be willing to put a small Post Office at this location to replace the one on 25th Street.
@Nia – don’t expect the selection at Jim’s Local Market to be very different than Farm Fresh. Square footage wise it will actually be roughly the same size as Farm Fresh or possibly even a little smaller. The last article I read cited ~28000 SF. Half the size of a typical Kroger.
Still a good addition to the north end of the neighborhood. And crucial to carless residents who live in that part of the East End food desert. But people should probably manage their expectations about how robust a store this will be.

That would require the USPS to want to have such a location and they are in shrink mode, rather than expansion mode.
