From Sarah Powers of Safe Routes to School:

On behalf of Chimborazo Elementary School and the PTA, please allow me to invite you to the Chimborazo Safe Routes to School Walkabout Study on May 3rd, 2017! We will meet at 8:15a in front of the school and end by 10:15a. I understand this is short notice, but we had to work around the SOL testing period that’s approaching. It is ok if you can only attend for part of the time. Or if you are unable to attend, you are welcome to send a representative in your place.

Participation in the walkabout involves helping to identify key barriers and issues to students walking or biking to school, including infrastructure and physical safety. The total time commitment will be no more than two hours. We will divide into small groups after meeting as a larger group and participants will be provided with tools to record issues as they make observations around the school.

A Department of Public Works Operations Manager for Traffic Engineering will be in attendance and contributing his 30+ year breadth of knowledge and expertise working on Virginia and RVA transportation. Additionally, staff from Richmond City Health District and Fit4Kids, as well as Peter Paul Development Center and other local organizations, will be participating.

Following the walkabout, I will develop a report of recommendations that the school and other organizations can use to develop grant proposals to address identified barriers. Programming through the current SRTS initiative will also be enhanced by this information. We are truly looking to support program outcomes that contribute to increased physical activity (and better mental wellbeing for learning) and healthier, safer communities through community organization and technical assistance/capacity building.
