Residential trash accepted at East Richmond Road Convenience Center (AKA the dump)
04/28/2017 4:36 PM by John M
In a return to service after a number of years, city residents will be able to dispose of household trash at the East Richmond Road Convenience Center (ERRCC) located at 3800 East Richmond Road beginning Monday, May 1.
All trash must be bagged. Bulk items, such as furniture and mattresses, will not be accepted.
Those utilizing the service must provide proof of City residency with a valid driver’s license, utility bill or vehicle registration.
ERRCC hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The facility is closed on weekends and on holidays recognized by Richmond city government.
Does anyone know if they’ll take car tires?
It took 6 years to get this far. and although this is nice news it doesn’t solve the problem.
Here’s what I said before council this month – and that there was not another household debris enabled dump in the city was news to more than one council member. Having this go another step, opening our local dump to household debris again, won’t stop the illegal dumping that we live with but it should certainly help:
Councilperson:
Right now there’s only one dump in the city that takes household debris – and it’s south of the river.
Richmond used to have a dump north of the river that took household debris…in the east end to be specific. For the first 3 or 4 years after the closure of the section of that dump to household debris I took the problem of its closure to my councilperson. I never got any response and certainly the problem hasn’t been addressed. So tonight I’m bringing the problem to the full council because my infirmities have increased as has the problem of illegal dumping.
A trip to our city’s only household-debris enabled dump is time consuming: it includes the drive and usually a long wait once on site. For elderly or disabled residents, enduring the trip and the wait and then having to lift the debris – like tires or old mattresses or broken sofas – out of a vehicle and up over a concrete barrier is often impossible.
So here we have Richmond with a population that’s growing fast on a tsunami of new development and renovation….and a big number of us aren’t just underserved – but effectively not served at all. A number that includes more than just the aged and infirm.
As pointed out by residents, by various city commissions, and by the media…Richmond’s got a problem with illegal dumping, a problem that’s growing about as fast as our population. In October, Channel 12 pointed out that the illegal dumpers in our city are winning. But what’s getting dumped isn’t all just the old tires mentioned in that story.
I’ve been told that the cost of reopening the dump to household debris might cost $2million. That’s less than the cost of ten, tall steel rings.
Reopening the dump to household debris will provide service to thousands who’ve been denied practical access to a place to dispose of this type of debris and will cut down on the city’s growing problem of illegal dumping.
I’m paraphrasing from a recent interview with the mayor when I ask that you fix this long standing problem – it’s the sort of thing we pay you to do.
So there’s that to look forward to.
cool
I’m happy for that!
No Snark: this is a real quality of life improvement for the East End. Thank you to Ann Wortham who has been a champion for this cause for a long time.
Not so sure if that’s a plus. Mostly, the Richmond dump is used for things that don’t fit in bags.
Richmond is so behind in the garbage game.
Just down Charles City Rd, not a mile from the city border, there is a Henrico public transfer station, but only for Henrico residents. It’s clean and organized, and has many areas for cars and trucks to dump debris into containers from a retaining wall above. Seldom are there lines or the stench that is the SouthSide hellhole transfer station on Hopkins. There is even a covered area to leave items that are in too good of a condition to throw away so that other residents may take those items home.
Good garbage collection and disposal is a fundamental part of a civilized society. Government in this city can be so obtuse sometimes.
It’s not a good idea for those that live near the dump and are exposed to hazardous waste on a daily basis. There are apts. next to it. They should not be exposed to this. Hope this is fake news.
That’s a good warning, Jea. I see this news as good unless you are right that it may be abused in the way you are fearing. So it needs to be monitored and supervised properly. Hopefully the authorities will be diligent that it be done correctly.
