Groundbreaking yesterday for The Goodwyn at Union Hill

Better Housing Coalition held a rainy groundbreaking ceremony yesterday at the Citadel of Hope property yesterday for a development that will be known as The Goodwyn at Union Hill, after the Hilton W. Goodwyn and Hallie J. Goodwyn Fund.
great,Better Housing Coalition is putting projects right in the middle of our neighborhood. Now we won’t have to go to Crieghton Court to get shot and robbed. You may publish my name if you wish
There is a lot of daylight between guaranteed affordable housing and the issues surrounding the public housing communities. I feel your concern, but it’s misguided.
Despite statements by some “better” housing coalition staffers that this project in Union Hill will be affordable housing and/or mixed income, the coalition’s LIHTC application states that rentals will be for 100% low income residents.
More enlightened communities throughout the country are aware that continual “warehousing” of low income residents – isolating them – has done, and continues to do, lasting harm; but Richmond perpetuates this harmful practice, changing the locations and the age of the buildings but not much else.
It remains a mystery as to how making the same mistake over and over again is “better.”
The city’s mayor recently facilitated a meeting designed to figure out how to get low income people out of aging residences…bend over, taxpayers.
(And if anyone can figure how to keep a residence from aging, let me know…I want one.)
