Then and now on Jefferson Avenue

The former Family Supermarket at 24th and Jefferson was condemned in April of 2013. At the end, the property was owned by John B. Mann, Carolyn M. Myers, and Josephine R Katz Residuary TR, and appears to have been in the Mann family since at least the late 1970s.
At the end of April 2017, the property was purchased by 2411 M ST LLC, the group who are working to develop the triangle bounded by M Street, Jefferson Avenue, and 24th Street into a mixed-used, multistory project. Daniil Kleyman sent the photos over, saying that they’re excited and have plans to restore the building.

let me guess, a coffee shop opening soon?
Hey! I am totally cool with more coffee.
This is welcome news. Thanks Matt and Danill for hanging in there and working out a deal with the former owners.
“Restore” that building?? By all previous reports, and it’s current appearance (sinking, etc.), it needs to be demolished. If historic reports of standing raw sewage under it’s floors were accurate, wouldn’t the soil/foundation beneath it need to be removed? #notanengineer
John, any word on if they’re planning to integrate this into the planned development or leave it visually and meaningfully separate?
I’ve always loved this building, even though it is a dilapidated ruin. The unusual shape of the building’s footprint and the bay windows give it a really striking façade. If not “restored,” hopefully it can be faithfully reconstructed.
#4: I’ve seen worse 🙂 All joking aside, we’re still waiting for an engineer report. The previous owner did stabilize the foundation with multiple piers in the basement, but we’re not sure how good of a job they did. This is a very unique historic building so if it’s at all doable, we’re going to save it.
@Daniil glad to hear you guys are going to try to save it! Looking forward to hearing from you and Matt at the next UHCA meeting.
