Anyone else not getting mail over in the Oakwood area?
05/25/2017 7:37 AM by John M
From Kimberly:
Anyone else not getting mail over in the Oakwood area? We live at 33rd and Q and haven’t seen mail since last Friday. Our mail service has always been spotty, but this is a whole new level. I sincerely doubt we have NOTHING coming to us, so I’m starting to wondering where our 6 days worth of mail is being stashed. Is it just us?
I live in the 300 block of Chimbo and have only had mail delivery 3-4 times in the last month. I mailed myself an envelope from 25th St on 5/5 and still haven’t received it.
I have mailed myself letters in the Chimborazo area and they have never shown up. Never. Not once.
I just had my kids soccer photos delivered this week (oakwood) that were bent and all messed up because the delivery person decided to fold the envelope in half despite the three notices written in bold "photos, do not bend". I paid for those soccer team photos, very irritatating.
Yes! they seem to only deliver like once or twice a week and I’ve had stuff show up months later.
Folks, PLEASE let Rep. McEachen know about these issues! and Senators Warner and Kaine, while you’re at it. This is inexcusable.
I’m at 24th and E. Marshall and I’ve noticed some pretty big delays in mail as well. I only just got a couple cards family sent for Easter.
Do we think the closing of the post office on 25th is playing a role here?
I’m at 33rd and Q and received mail and a package via USPS on Saturday and I’ve gotten mail at least 3 times this week.
At the Newbille 7th district meeting on Tuesday, Mr. Markel was there to speak about the grocery store development on Nine Mile. There is other retail space that has not been filled yet so questions were asked. Someone asked if a new post office could be put there, and he seemed interested, and everyone in the room was like “yes yes!”. Not sure if it will pan out but would be a great location for sure.
I’m on the 700 block of 35th and was having issues with mail delivery long before the post office closed. They’ve lost checks from clients and a letter from the IRS. Important stuff for a small business owner.
Well, someone finally showed up just now… not sure whether it was some special scenario because I had a package today, or they just got around to it. He did have someone else with him, so it looked like a potential training situation?
Just about everyday it’s not delivered on stuff in wrong boxes when they do deliver
Peter Paul here: mail about once or twice a week except yesterday I got delivered to twice. what.
Was that picture taken yesterday morning? You all should be more considerate of the mail person’s working conditions. Have a little compassion. If you had to work in the snow during the month of May, you would be even more butt hurt than you are now about not getting your snail mail. Who still gets mail other than packages? Stop killing trees.
From Blair Wriston, Legislative Correspondent
Congressman A. Donald McEachin (VA-04):
We saw a posting in the Church Hill People’s News that constituents in the Oakland area reportedly have been having issues with their mail being delivered in a timely fashion. I contacted a USPS government relations representative and forwarded the link to the specific post for his attention. He said he would take a look into the issue and follow up with me directly with more information. Just wanted to let you know we are on the issue.
@14 John M, the mail delivery issue on many levels, starting with the notorious Sandston sorting hub on down to incompetent delivery carriers, has gotten beyond ridiculous. A couple years back, and more recent in another lapse, Sandston was cited as the “worst” postal sorting hub in the entire country (USA). Then, after the issue of timecard tampering that caused a mass lawsuit by thousands of local employees against the Post Office, I am sure this has lead to a loss of moral. We watched yesterday from a distance, a carrier drive up to our house, walk to the steps, and THREW a package onto our porch rather than walk it up and place it by the door. They did not even knock to see if anyone was home to accept the package. No wonder there is a high number of package losses.
I got mail twice today too. Whatevs…one was a check, the other something from the state. I’m grateful to have it at all.
My son was looking for time sensitive mail that should have been here already. All I’ve gotten is junk mail.
@13 Mrs. Kept Wife, I’m not quite sure where you live, but obviously it can’t be here in Richmond. No, it wasn’t snowing in late May here in Richmond. I’m not quite sure why that particular picture was chosen to go with this post, but I’m sure the moderator of this site had his reasons.
In response to your comments about mail carriers’ working conditions, there was no mention of this being the fault of the carriers in the original posting and the carriers themselves were barely mentioned in response posts prior to yours. Most of the issues mentioned here are most likely the result of management issues and reduction in budget (or closure of Post Offices, which we have recently experienced here in this neighborhood- yes, possibly for good reason to protect workers from hazardous conditions, but no mention has been made of any effort to re-open or relocate this Station…) I, for one, (as I’m sure many of my neighbors do) care deeply about the working conditions of our carriers. I absolutely hate how little they are paid, and how their routes get expanded on a regular basis so that they are working ridiculous hours and walking in awful conditions. I (and I’m sure many of my neighbors) would love to see the USPS- a government entity- create more carrier jobs, rather than reduce them, so that working conditions can be improved. After living in Church Hill for several years, I and my neighbors have enjoyed conversations and developing relationships with my mail carriers. We want better conditions for them.
In regards to your question about who still gets mail other than packages, I believe the answer is “lots of people”. My husband and I do as much e-billing as we can, but unfortunately, we can’t control when a company (a hospital, for example) decides to send us a paper bill instead of sending us a bill online. This is the mail I care about receiving, because major problems arise when bills that don’t show up never get paid. We also enjoy keeping up relationships with our grandmothers who do not have computers, and prefer to send cards and letters in addition to calling us to say “hi”. Unfortunately not everyone can (or chooses to) afford to buy a computer or internet service. So yes, “snail mail” is still a thing for many of us, and it’s very important to some of us for lots of reasons. And no, up in Church Hill, we aren’t heartless creatures who don’t care one bit about the people who work extremely hard to deliver that mail.
@Kimberly – the only picture I had from the area showing a mail carrier at work (and kicking ass, really)
Exactly!!!! 🙂
i’m in the chimbo area and our regular carrier is on point. Thanks Stella for doing a grand job under often difficult circumstances.
1500 block of 35th St and I almost never get my mail. Don’t even use it as a mailing address anymore. I’ve been cutting whoever the mail person is some slack since my porch isn’t in the best repair, but it sounds like a wide spread issue!
