A memorial dedication for the recently restored Robert Rose monument will take place on June 30 at 10:30 AM.

The Robert Rose monument is the earliest visible grave marker (1751) at St. John’s Church, a National Historic Landmark and had faced deterioration from environmental factors. The dedication of this recently restored monument will occur on the 266th anniversary of Rose’s death.

Robert Rose, born in Scotland, immigrated to the colonies in 1725 as a clergyman. Tradition credits him with the invention of the bateaux in 1749 when he lashed two shallow canoes together to create a boat to carry tobacco down the river from his home in Albemarle County to Richmond. He died while traveling to Richmond and was buried in the churchyard in 1751.

Bag piper Tim McCleod will perform during the ceremony, which will be officiated by Rev. Amelie Wilmer.
