This building serves no purpose for the park or community. It was a service facility for the swimming pool when the swimming pool was there. It should be removed. The porta potty should also be removed. I do not like my tax money paying for this porta potty. I have never seen anyone use it.
Funny how when this is reversed It literally makes national news sometimes. and when it happened in tuckahoe there was like 4 stories about it on all the local news. meanwhile this probably wont even make the news. Just like when that white autistic boy was attacked by like 10 people on JD.
I suspect the writer is white and is suffering from
“white guilt” syndrome. It references what some demographers estimate that whites will be the minority in the US by 2042…and they will be the new victims of racism…
This is unfortunate. Maybe take the monuments that symbolize hate down. Maybe stop marginalizing and regrouping an entire race of people. Maybe not post comments like the ones before me. Just maybe…
Gentrification gone wrong. These things are done to put fear in the weak. Doesn’t surprise me at all. Next thing g you know it’ll be a rally like Charlottesville!
I suspect the writer is white and is suffering from
“white privilege” syndrome. It references what some demographers estimate that whites will be the minority in the US by 2042…and thus grappling with what it means to have systemic racism collapse around them as they become less able to manipulate institutional racism to benefit themselves.
I would support cameras in all our playgrounds, both public and school. I’d like to know what happens after dark in these areas. Maybe this could prevent “vandalism” such as the constant arson on the playground equipment around here.
That is very, very, concerning! This person is no child nor is this childs play. Its serious and should be taken seriously. We do not want these people in our mist (community of USA)!
To the author, you have rights, the right to leave this community, this city, this state, this country, please exercise all of these. You will never succeed in alienating or dividing citizens of Church Hill, Virginia,or USA. I don’t care what 45 says or does not say. Not gonna happen for yah!
Hate to tell ya but church hill is divided and lots of people here feel alienated. things maybe better for some but not for all, hell not even for most. let’s fix our damn schools & lookout for each other.
@kay9 There is institutional racism in Richmond. I’m a black male, and I’ve been in Richmond 30 plus years. I don’t like to play race, but I’ve experienced it, and seen it. Institutional racism exist within Richmond’s job market, schools system, segregated communities, and the criminal justice system. And just because you’ve had black mayors, doesn’t mean that these mayors were for black people (city council included). They were figure heads. Mayors don’t run this city, it’s the people who have the money who run Richmond. Dwight Jones, in my opinion, couldn’t stand poor blacks, and this new mayor is a poor man’s Barack Obama.
@Tony Yes, churchill is divided. I was on 33rd street the other day doing pest control work, and it looks like an entire different community from where I reside in eastview. I see alot of “blm” signs around there, but what does that mean? Really
I could, but I’m not going to try to explain 30 plus years of experience on this site. If you’re not black, and if you haven’t lived the black experience in this city, don’t try to tell me what it’s like being black, and don’t insult my intelligence, because first of all, you can’t relate. Thats why it’s called institutional racism, it’s done in a more subtle way.have a great day
Richmond was institutionally designed to fail in the 1970s. The best intentions of the current leaders aren’t enough if they don’t work to undo the 1970s annexation rules and 1950s-70s public housing concentration to practically end segregation.
While there is a history of racism in RVA no doubt certain individuals are very eager and willing to attach the label of racism to anything and everything they encounter in their life that they don’t like. I’ve literally heard a neighbor saying the fact stroops charged $8 for one of their specialty hot dogs was racist. That’s victim mentality.
Per Justice Policy, a nonprofit organization, according to a 2013 study, African Americans made up ~20% of the Virginia population, but 60.8% of its state prison inmates, and 47% of arrests. Because #math, we can reasonably say that could be applied to the Greater Richmond community as well
2) Segregated Communities –
There are multiple, easily obtainable, stories about the history of public housing in Richmond. Google “Richmond va history of public housing”. I linked the top hit below.
Spoiler alert, it’s not a pretty story, and it’s full of blatant racism and a desire to tuck black folks away into small corners of our community.
3) School system – This one’s easy, we have schools under federal civil rights investigations. Not to mention that as a direct result of #2, you have concentrated areas of poverty, where kids are all going to the same schools, which have high levels of disrepair due to the lack of taxpayer funds, which discourages teachers from teaching at these schools, which leads to poor schools. Obviously, I’m oversimplifying, but this stuff is happening every day.
4. Access to jobs-
I’m not as aware here, but I’ll just say this: methods of access to a job for a person with low-to-no income are limited (i.e., public transit). Bus routes in this city suck, and because most of us (I’m including myself here truthfully) have a car, we don’t think about this issue very often, which means nothing gets done. One of the reasons BRT is being pushed is to increase access to jobs for folks who can’t afford a car. Not saying that the first step in that project will do it, but it should help.
My last point I’ll make directly to you, Kay9. A couple of these articles, the school system one specifically, were in the paper THIS WEEK. No one’s going to wait around for you to open your eyes and simply see what’s going on in our neighborhood, city, and country. But, just like I needed to have my eyes opened to this stuff one day, I hope this helps you open yours.
And to Will + others, please don’t read this as me trying to out-do you or any people feeling oppressed and fed up, I believe you have every right to pass comments like the one Kay9 made right on by.
Blacks do represent a disproportionate percentage of inmates who become incarcerated. But incarceration is correlated with criminal activity. FBI statistics show 52% of homicides are attributed to black offenders. And delving down further those homicide stats you will see they are overwhelming attributed to young black men not black women or older men. So essentially roughly 50% of murders originate from 3% of the US population (young black men). Even if you think FBI statistics are overstated due to some structural bias that margin of error would be maybe 10% not 1600%. Sadly young black men commit vastly more violent crimes. As long as that continues to be the case they will also be incarcerated at far higher rates. Hopefully we can create more economic opportunities for young black men so they don’t feel the need to resort to violence. But in the meantime it is still absolutely reasonable that if you commit a violent crime upon someone that you pay the price for that.
I already know how some people will choose to respond to the above… The prison system is full of non-violent drug offenders. That’s not really true. If you combine local/state/federal prison systems violent offenders account for over 60% of inmates. Drug offenders account for 16%. 6 of those 16% are said to be non-violent possession type drug charges. I got these numbers from Vox a few months back. Vox is a liberal leaning blog not an alt-right or conservative publication. Anyway, would I like to see that 16% number go down. Absolutely. But you’re kidding yourself if you think the prisons are overwhelming filled with people who just had a little pot on them. They are filled overwhelmingly with violent people.
It is all very sad. I wish it werent the case. But this mantra that blacks represent 13% of the population so they should only represent 13% of inmates is baloney. Whoever commits serious crimes should be in jail.
Also, I remember when Cloverleaf Mall opened, a heated debate occurred about wheather or not to run City bus service to the mall. The reasoning behind those that didn’t want it was that there would be too much theft if “those” people could get out here. The end result was that the bus stopped on the other side of Chippenham Parkway making it necessary to walk on a very dangerous road to get to the Mall.
I did not have a car at the time but I wanted to see this fabulous new Mall so I took the bus. I , along with my fellow travelers were nearly run over twice! There were no sidewalks.
@36 Actually I think it was about that point in time when the General Assembly tried to give Chesterfield County money for public transit into and from Richmond. As memory serves, Chesterfield rejected the money and someone on their board of supervisors made the remark that ‘if the motels want workers from Richmond, let them send vans to get them and return them’. That’s racism, too.
It just saddens my heart to see someone who has FACTS staring them clearly in the face and still refuses to accept what they see. I guess if you were black you would understand the points being brought up and the disenfranchisement that people feel. I will say this- there is absolutely racism here… the sooner you wake and take off yourrose colored glasses the better you’ll be. You can’t understand something that doesn’t affect you. The comments disagreeing with the fact that racism exists here just don’t want to admit it because they maybe don’t see it? It’s people like you who are the enablers of the racists and perpetuate this idea that we’re delusional. SMH
Do we need to get together a clean up crew?
This building serves no purpose for the park or community. It was a service facility for the swimming pool when the swimming pool was there. It should be removed. The porta potty should also be removed. I do not like my tax money paying for this porta potty. I have never seen anyone use it.
What does that even mean? Can they not even articulate their racism?
Funny how when this is reversed It literally makes national news sometimes. and when it happened in tuckahoe there was like 4 stories about it on all the local news. meanwhile this probably wont even make the news. Just like when that white autistic boy was attacked by like 10 people on JD.
Anyone have cameras on the alley on either side of the park?
This is the beginning of a long headache
Why are we surprised, when to many of us refuse to display common courtesy to one another in Church Hill
I suspect the writer is white and is suffering from

Instead of painting over it you should’ve spray painted underneath "please clarify"
I believe 2042 is supposed to be the year America goes white-minority and that scares the hell out of white supremacists.
Emily Klinedinst funny how they know that estimate but seem to ignore evidence on like a hundred other issues.
Gentrification gone wrong. These things are done to put fear in the weak. Doesn’t surprise me at all. Next thing g you know it’ll be a rally like Charlottesville!
@Kay9, let me fix this for you:

Seems as some people needs to be there during baseball season to see people use it
Hilarious. There is a lot going on here. All I can think of is that this wouldnt have happened in the 90s when White people were afraid to go there.
I would support cameras in all our playgrounds, both public and school. I’d like to know what happens after dark in these areas. Maybe this could prevent “vandalism” such as the constant arson on the playground equipment around here.

There is no ‘white genocide” taking place in South Africa today! A terribly egregious, misunderstood, statement! Despicable!
Really??
Hate to tell ya but church hill is divided and lots of people here feel alienated. things maybe better for some but not for all, hell not even for most. let’s fix our damn schools & lookout for each other.
@14…”institutional racism’? Really? In a city run by blacks for decades. Might need to think about that one.
@ 16 What are you talking about????
@kay9 There is institutional racism in Richmond. I’m a black male, and I’ve been in Richmond 30 plus years. I don’t like to play race, but I’ve experienced it, and seen it. @23, Kay9
I rarely talk on discussion boards, but I was shocked by your comment. I’d strongly encourage you to look a bit into Richmond’s history. I’d recommend this resource as a starting point: http://brandylanepublishers.com/wp/book/list-all/history/richmonds-unhealed-history-by-ben-campbell/
With love.
@25 “racism exist within Richmond’s job market, schools system, segregated communities, and the criminal justice system”
Can you provide examples and insert facts…otherwise, this sounds like your opinion?
I could, but I’m not going to try to explain 30 plus years of experience on this site. Hello Kay9, I second the suggestion to read Ben Campbell’s Richmond’s Unhealed History if you didn’t grow up in Richmond.
Well said, Will.
Richmond was institutionally designed to fail in the 1970s. The best intentions of the current leaders aren’t enough if they don’t work to undo the 1970s annexation rules and 1950s-70s public housing concentration to practically end segregation.

@Kay9
I’ll present some facts for you:
1) Criminal Justice System-
Per Justice Policy, a nonprofit organization, according to a 2013 study, African Americans made up ~20% of the Virginia population, but 60.8% of its state prison inmates, and 47% of arrests. Because #math, we can reasonably say that could be applied to the Greater Richmond community as well

I don’t think an $8 hot dog is racist but it is stupid. Well
maybe it would fly in NY. But IT DID NOT fly here!
