Two houses with vertical siding

There are at least 2 houses in the neighborhood with vertical siding. Was this a thing? Anyone know anything about it?

It is called board and batten siding and was used on Carpenter Gothic structures in the mid-19th century.

Is the siding in the top image (beige house) made of metal?
I think so
I don’t believe either of these were original applications.
Although the second house needs some TLC, I actually think it looks okay when there are two materials used for siding and there is a clear divide (i.e. the porch roof in the second photo), or when there are breaks for a water table or some sort of horizontal decorative element (a google search for “carpenter gothic siding” shows some examples of the latter).
Is this a historic accuracy question or an aesthetics question?
Just curious. There’s another house in the Fan with vertical siding (https://www.flickr.com/photos/murden/6589430713/in/album-72157601595203575/), have always wondered about this.
These 3 would be modern application for strictly aesthetic reasons, IMO. Board and Batten was a utility application for barns or cabins seen mostly in rural, drier climates, or on sheds in the city. It is more susceptible to water intrusion and warpage than clapboard. Board and batten siding would denote a lower quality/expense building until nostalgic recreations.
My husband and I purchased and moved into the top house in December. The siding is metal. We were told it was put up after a house fire. We call it the shipping container house. : )
Yes there was a terrible fire in that house in 3600 block E. Broad in 1983 or 84. I lived directly across street. Was awoken to see flames coming from every window; at the time it was a rooming house with around 14 people living there.
