Justin Mattingly at the RTD has the 10 folks who filed for the interim School Board position:
- Sharon Burton, a former Richmond Public Schools teacher
- Harrison Hayes, the director of the TRiO Educational Opportunity Center at Virginia Commonwealth University
- Charles Nance, a lawyer
- Cheryl Burke, a former RPS principal
- Bryce Robertson, a lawyer
- Tim May, a managing partner at a travel agency
- Garry Callis, owner of the Real Deal Life Skills training program
- Corrisse Jordan, a federal government auditor
- Roderyck Bullock, a former track coach
- Kai Banks, an office/fiscal coordinator in VCU’s School of Education
Sharon Burton was my third grade teacher and one of my favorite teachers! Aside from being a great teacher, she is a great person.

By using a picture of MLK Middle School in this post I expect CHPN is drawing attention to a serious RPS conundrum in the East End where 5 elementary schools in the 7th District feed into a troubled middle school in the 6th District, and then back into a high school in the 7th District. MLK Middle is the linchpin school that makes or breaks the East End school funnel. Don Coleman, who lives on the same street as the school, learned how important MLK Middle is to the 7th District and to the entire Richmond City School District. I suggest the appointed 7th District School Board Member would be well served to reach out to Pastor Coleman to fully understand the importance of MLK Middle School to the 7th District.
I would simply suggest that if you worked or ran a school that didn’t receive accreditation, they would make a poor choice to help manage the system as a whole.
Sharon Burton’s experience as a life-long RPS teacher and chair of the board at Patrick Henry gives her a very valuable perspective of RPS – from the inside out.
She was extremely helpful as we navigated RPS during the Chimborazo E.S. effort to become an authorized IB World School.
RPS school board picks Cheryl Burke
Thank you all who supported me as a candidate to fill the 7th district seat. Although I did not get it, I am forever appreciative of the words of encouragement, letters of support, and those who came to speak before the school board. It meant so much to see a former third grade student (Queen of Church Hill) write kind words.
There were some great candidates that came forward. I am encouraged to see qualified persons in this district interested in the education of the students in the East End as well as the entire City. If RPS is going to continue with neighborhood schools, let’s continue to be a voice for what we want education to look like in our district. Let’s bring parents and educators together to hear what they want.
