Recognize this woman stealing a phone?
11/21/2017 11:11 AM by John M
From the folks at Union Market:
Someone swiped a customer’s phone off of one of our patio tables Friday evening. Passing along the video so folks can keep an eye out, as I’m sure we’re not her only stop!

Should be easy to spot with the hair…
Sneaky!!
Do people not know there are cameras everywhere nowadays? Stupid.
This girl walks by my house often. Usually with others and wearing backpacks so I think it’s when they get out of school. Most likely attends a highschool nearby. Walks towards Oakwood area..
Crime of opportunity. We should be able to leave our stuff on a table for a couple of minutes without someone walking off with it. Those days are long gone ?
I hope this post helps to catch her.
I believe she was reaching for the book, but missed . . .
Well, she really put the “perp” in purple!
Anyone have the date and timestamp on this – we could check our camera for possible additional footage?
It was Friday around 4:30
Hunter Robertson Thanks. Nothing on our camera around that timeframe.
Doesn’t look like a woman. More like a teen. Was this phone left unattended? I got my entire back pack stolen at VCU from Cabell one year. Lost all my books, notes, everything. Hard lesson to learn.
i hate a thief!!!
I think that purple hair could be spotted from a helicopter..
Im sorry but who in their right mind just leaves their phone and belongings. In this neighborhood at that. Youre asking for it to be taken.
They just dont give a shit.
Folks, don’t leave stuff unattended. Don’t leave things visible in your cars or on your table while you take a whiz. There is no “safe” place to leave your valuables unattended.
You pay me.I will find her.see her around all the time.never forgot that hair
Has this been reported to the police? I am so over this. No excuses! Thiefs belong in jail.
Please report this to the police. There need to be consequences for this bs.
For taking a phone? Someone belongs in jail? How long should they serve?
Thats up to a judge to decide.
So there is no answer other than jail. Is that why youre saying?
*what
What do you propose? How do we stop this bold and completely confident stealing?
Agree that jail is overkill for a first time offender if thats the case. Consequences are needed. Something needs to happen to break this trend of see it, want it, take it thats happening in our neighborhood.
I dont think its bold. More so Ive got nothing to lose which is the deeper issue. She is a human and has a story. She could be our neighbor. Church Hill residents could do a far better job investing in their neighborhood non monetarily speaking. Its a strange time in Church Hill right now and The Us vs. Them mentality has got to stop.
You think that is what motivated this behavior?
Jail is extreme for a first time young offender. I think there should be a fine with community service and some shaming like holding a sign on the corner detailing their crime. Granted its just a phone, but that is hell for the person who it was stolen from. If my phone was stolen, my life would be upside down. I wouldn’t have money to replace it anytime soon and would be a nervous wreck about personal information being breached.
@27 The latest chapter in her story is that she’s a thief. What’s the Us vs Them mentality here? The law-abiding citizens vs the law-breaking citizens?
Shame on us law-abiders, right? Let’s give each and every one of these law-breakers a 15 minute segment on NPR so we can hear their “story,” and legitimize their criminal activity.
Here’s the deal. It doesn’t matter what anyone thinks should happen. VA has a fairly low bar for felony theft. So the presumable result is this 16-18 y/o is a felon with likely a suspended sentence. You’ve now got a young person with very dim prospects for employment, housing, or education. Don’t see much upside for us or them in this scenario. It continues to boggle my mind why someone would leave a several hundred dollar phone unattended. That phone gets stolen in that scenario ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD, this situation isn’t a Church Hill issue, it’s a take better care of your stuff issue. Should this young woman face consequences, certainly, but the likely result “downtown” does not serve her or this community well.
#30 – Thanks, Brian.
If cops are not involved, this encourages the perps.
“Us versus them mentality?
As in, people who don’t steal versus people who do? I’ll gladly join the Us team.
Anthony B – I think I understand where you’re coming from, but she needs to face some sort of consequences for her actions. I would say the actual punishment is what matters – some community service, restitution or return of the stolen item, maybe a weekend in jail or being publicly shamed somehow as others have already suggested. Nothing too excessive. But she shouldn’t end up with a permanent record as a result. The actual punishment should be consequence enough.
If poverty was a factor or if she has mental health issues or what have you, then yes, absolutely, she should get some help. But she still needs to experience the consequences of her actions. The problem is that if she is caught the legal system will A) suspend the sentence, so there’s no sense of immediate consequence B) She will end up with a permanent record one way or another (either because she does something else like this or because of how the court handles the matter). C) If there is some compelling reason for her to steal, it won’t ever be addressed.
Anthony Bryant – hopefully her parents will invest in her monetarily so the community doesnt have to.
Wish the courts would impose accountability of the guilty, and the guardians, to community service of x hrs to a non-profit @ the choice of the victim. Then find out why.
What a brat. I hope someone puts her in jail for a bit so she at least learns that theft equals inconvenience. That phone is long gone though.
People who think like her are disgusting.
Love ya Brian!
Just call the cops and be done with. Stop this public shaming.
thank you for investing in proper modern cameras
#36 – Might not have been her parents who’ve invested in her, but somebody has.
A little bit (and I freely admit it was only a little bit) of online looking shows that a hair do like hers runs from about $80 to a couple of hundred dollars.
I know there are parents with kids who attend MLK Middle School from Mosby Court who routinely spend $200 on weaves/braids/etc…whether “goddess braids” or “box braids” or “braided buns” or “feed-in braids” or a variety of “ghana braids” or “cherokee braids” (?) and on and on and on…and adding color seems to cost extra.
I mean what is law enforcement gonna do? Stop their very important investigations to find this poor girl And the phone she took? Its like when I left my car unlocked a few weeks back and someone broke in and literally made a hot mess of my car. The cop Essentially laughed in my face!Next time time maybe dont leave your phone outside unattended, and then we wont have to plaster this poor girls face all over the internet for a phone ! Because if you leave your things outside unattended someone is going to take it …Churchill or not. It sucks-YES! Is it right -of course not. Manchester is going through the same growing pains right now. Lots of new construction….lots of new foot traffic…more creepy things happening.
@Kimberly- this poor girl?!?!? Really? Why is stealing tolerated in this neighborhood? I don’t care if it’s a flower pot or a car, it’s STEALING.
Even if it’s not a top priority for the cops, information on crime in our community is valuable. I made sure a detective in our area was aware of this girl and her tendencies.
@43 makes a very valid point: if you live in the city, you need to “help people make good choices.” Don’t leave your cell phone unattended. Don’t leave property visible in your car. Don’t leave your car, house or garage unlocked. Don’t leave packages on your porch. It’s just life in an urban environment. Heck, it’s life in the Fashionable West End as well. I agree with @44 that all crime should be reported- not so much because it’s going to get your phone or your packages back, but because it influences manpower allocation in the various districts. Don’t report crime? The police have no way to know that there is crime.
A few of these comments have such overt or thinly veiled racism…I don’t even know where to start. We can do better, people.
You can start by putting that race card back in your pocket. Possibly one comment out of forty-six makes an assumption, and you want to focus on that aspect of the situation instead of the crime. Just stop.
