Information sought on badly injured dog found on 33rd Street (Update: She’s recovering!)
From Richmond Animal Care and Control:
This little girl was found in Church Hill (N 33rd Street) yesterday morning. She was freezing and badly injured from what appears to be multiple bite wounds (both old and new)?
Officer Jones scooped her up and transported to VVC, where the team was able to stop the hypothermia and safely sedate to begin cleaning her up. What they uncovered will require weeks of carefully managed wound care.
We do not know if her eyes are salvageable and if her body will be able to fight the infection that has already set in. We need your help. Please consider making a donation to cover the cost of her care at
https://www.raccfoundation.org/donate-now.Please say a little prayer for her and share this picture in an effort to bring any information about this dog to RACC.
Someone knows how this happened, someone saw something and that someone can remain anonymous-please call 804-646-5573 or pm us on Facebook. Our officers are already working this investigation. We will keep you updated on her progress?? #weareyourcityshelter #helpushelpher
I believe this was the same pup we saw last night on NBC12 news they called Kenzie Rae, who is at the RACC and for now is doing fine but a miracle because of the extent of her injuries. Will need one more surgery I understand. Says she is a lovable dog and once she is better will be seeking a foster home before finding a forever home for her. From what I saw, her left eye may not be saved but her right eye was open. We had an abused rescue French Bulldog mix once with a blind left eye and she was the most lovable thing. I would take this Pit mix baby in a heartbeat.
Does she need any fostering or care while she heals?
If pit bulls were any more vicious they would be almost human.

– Amen!
Pit Bulls are not vicious by nature. It is through selective breeding and training that makes them that way.
People think having a Pit makes them “Bad Ass” in the eyes of their peers. It just makes you look like a “Dumb Ass” instead.
Oh my gawd, I’m sobbing! Poor little puppy girl.
There are some really big assholes in this world and whoever did this has a nice spot in hell. Dogs don’t start fight clubs…
Agree E! People who participate – in any way – in dog fighting deserve a special place in hell. It doesn’t just hurt the dogs but all the other poor small animals (like kittens and rabbits) they kill to “train” the fighters. And then with all the breeding there are too many pit bull puppies and then other people have to raise them.
@6 MP… so true. Just like the female who was thrown out of a moving vehicle recently just after giving birth to a litter. Heartwrenching about the mother who was torn away from her pups let alone having gone through that physical trauma. But one shudders to think what happened to her unweaned pups.
Instead of waiting for that cute little Pom, that feisty Chihuahua, majestic Mastiff, or jumpy Jack, if you don’t have really young children at home, please don’t overlook the lovable Pit. Our local shelters are packed full of unwanted Pit Bulls and mixes that need a forever home. They are screened to make sure they are not vicious and have human interaction before adoption.
Is there any updates on if the person responsible has been located? Also, what can we do to help make sure this doesn’t happen to other innocent animals?
I live in the area. I pray for a full recovery, and that the sick, evil person who did this is held accountable. If you see something say something!
To the people who do this to our animal friends…one word.

Seriously, how can we help? I go for 6 mile walks all around the neighborhood and have never come across any evidence of dog fighting. Where would people do this, I wonder? In the basement? If so, would the dogs be locked up outside? Anybody have some insight on this? Can’t help if it’s hidden from us, but maybe we can be more aware of tell tale clues. I just don’t have any clues to build off at this point.
Heartbreaking
Without actually claiming to condone dog fighting herself, Whoopi Goldberg defended Michael Vick for his participation in dog fighting years ago: “He’s from the South, from the Deep South … This is part of his cultural upbringing.” (Vick’s foray into dog fighting occurred here in Virginia.)

My daughter visited Penelope last week. RACC, after checking out further the location and
extent of her injuries, doesn’t think she was used as
a bait dog for fighting. Her recognition of certain words
like treat seem to suggest she was somebody’s pet at some
point. Lots of mystery still about how she was injured
but clearly a miracle she was found in the
nick of time. She is in fact a total cuddle bug. She is not comfortable
Around other dogs.
She is in foster care now.
