Shooting at 20th and P Streets

05/24/2005 8:28 AM by

A Richmond neighborhood activist is in stable condition after being shot multiple times at around 7:20 AM yesterday at the corner of North 20th and P Streets.

Police say he was shot at least four times outside a boarded up apartment building in the 10-thousand block of North 20th Street. Investigators say the man was shot in his arms, leg and hip after some type of confrontation.

Residents in the Mosby neighborhood say the victim is a familiar face to the area. A man in his 40s, affectionately known as, “the clean-up guy.” He’s seen all over the neighborhood cutting grass, putting up flags and just volunteering to keep the area clean.

Neighbor Chester Smith calls the victim a “nice man” known for talking and laughing with people. Smith says the victim helped anybody clean up and talked to many about the Bible.

Smith, who has lived in the neighborhood for 17 years, was surprised and saddened by the sound of gunshots. He says, “It was upsetting to a lot of people this morning, I mean, to see him laying there “¦ he was bleeding and stuff, he was praying, so he kept his faith. It was just, it was shocking. It was senseless.”

Police say they are following several strong leads. They are looking for a man wearing a black T-shirt and khaki pants seen heading toward Mosby Street just after the shooting this morning.

Police are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
