The death of an elderly man found in an apartment at the Church Hill House at 2400 block of Burton Street is now being investigated as a homicide, Richmond police said today.

The body of the man, in his 60s, was found inside the apartment in the city’s East End about 2 p.m. yesterday. The man appeared to have been dead for several days.

Police this afternoon were not releasing the cause and manner of death, and were withholding the man’s identity until his family can be notified.

According to a resident of the building, in a 14-month period in 2003 and 2004 there were 94 crimes reported in the building. Those crimes included robbery, assault, breaking and entering, and vandalism, he said.

Church Hill House is owned by Church Hill Fairmount Limited Partnership, which is based in Boston, according to city tax records. The building is managed by Richmond-based Winn Management Co. of 823 E. Main St.
