A long-abandoned and possibly notorious house at 816 North 22nd Street was demolished this afternoon.

The city assessment info for the address show the property to be owned by Melvin Williams, Jr., who appears to have bought the property in 1996 for 10,000. This page also says that the house was built in 1900, which may or may not be accurate but is certainly close.
Ok, so this wasn’t the ‘prostitute finds dead guy’ house. It does apparently have a sordid past, though.
This is an unfortunate reality at any rate. Although the neighborhoods of greater Church Hill have indeed been moving in a most positive direction of rehabilitation, the critical mass sometimes is blind-sided by the avoidable the likes of this.
Kinda a sad reminder that life is fragile, both in the human, as well in the brick and mortar element.
I do hope indeed that this was a move (however misguided) on the part of a private party and not the city. I certainly disapprove of tax moneys being spent negatively, where they could otherwise be recouped at no cost or positive public gain (both fiscally and intrisically) with a rehabilitation… (Did this slip past tax sale!?)
At any rate, I feel a positive, uplifting vibe about the community, in spite of this. Hopefully we can avoid less and less of this in the future!
They did not save the porch fittings or anything!
How grossly wasteful!!!!!!
Disgusting!
Yes, Melvin Williams Jr. happens to be the Bishop at the church on 22nd and Verable. So, I forsee another sunday-only dirt lot for parking for this property. Perhaps it too can be wrapped in razor wire and we can continue with that Gitmo design motif we got going for this part of the Hill.
Comunorific.
Community + Terrific
I guess the last residential building to fall in that block is anticlimatic.
Rebuild a replica.
