a small shooting

We’ve gotten reputable reports of a non-fatal shooting on the 3000 block of East Franklin Street, with the comment that this “should be of no concern to the good neighbors in the area”.
TAGGED: crime
A shooting should be of no concern … forgive me but I think any discharge of a fire arm in our area should be an enormous concern to the “good neighbors” or any neighbor for that matter. Where did this quote come from?
Plus, there’s no “3000 block of East Franklin St.” At least, Franklin doesn’t intersect 30th.
3000 block of East Franklin
Taken in context, I understand “… of no concern” to indicate that this was violence between criminals, rather than “one of the good neighbors” (eg types not prone to gun violence in residential areas).
Franklin intersects with N 30th St at the bottom of the hill.
I talked to the landlord of the building today – the police told him that someone there was shot in the foot. We heard 5 shots before police arrived. There has been escalating violence in these two buildings over the past year. There are a lot of good people who live there, but there are some new tenants causing a lot of problems like this lately. How can we put more pressure on slum lords to rent to quieter, more peaceable tenants? Do you know of any resources? There are about 3 kids who live in the building and I’m concerned about their safety as well as cleaning up all the litter, mattresses, old tires, jalopies, you name it.
30th St. is buried under a bunch of weeds. E Franklin intersects with 31st at the bottom of the hill. Some people still call this area “Sugar Bottom.”
I stand corrected, it is 31st St.
who is the landlord? there is some talk about requiring all absentee landlords to register with the city -not sure which department – maybe CAPS? anyway, someone reading this will know more and can tell you who to contact. watch out if you are reporting neighbors – i would be careful about posting too much on line that might give away your identity – you never know who is reading this.
You can do a property search on the City website to find the property owner. As far as the litter or any other building code violations, go to the City website and make a citizens request or contact code enforcement. You may also want to check the VA Landlord Tenant Act. If I remember correctly, landlords/property owners are responsible for their tenants, meaning that if they are aware or have been notified that their tenants are causing trouble they have to do something about it.
From the Richmond Police Department Web site:

3007 E. Franklin St.
A male said he was assaulted and robbed by three unknown black males with a gun. The victim also was shot. His injury is not life threatening.
You can go to the City’s tax assessment page and it will tell you who owns the property. Thats a good start. It will also give you the address the tax bill is sent to 🙂 This would be a good start also.
Did not realize that there exsisted such a thing as a small shooting….oh well
oh yeah…the city reacts on complaints….
I happened to pick up the latest edition of the Free Press today, and happened to look at the legal ads…interesting irony, 3008 and 3010 East Franklin St. are up for tax sale in 30 days, if the owner doesn’t pay up back taxes, penalties, interest, etc. Both addresses are the same size and both are assessed at $3500 as of this year. Owner appears to have just a PO box as address. I don’t know if these addresses are where the shooting was, and I don’t know if they are houses or vacant lots…as BAM has posted, you can check the city’s website for property ownership information.
I don’t have a horse in this race, just thought I’d pass this along.
And I think ANY shooting is worthy of attention, no need to term it a ‘small’ shooting. John, who originally termed it a ‘small’shooting – the police report? Just curious, thanks.
Celeste — I think that word choice may have been mine, intending to quickly convey that the shooting wasn’t life threatening, was non-fatal, was not some kind of stick-up of someone’s maw-maw, etc.
John, thanks for the clarification. I understand why you chose it.
