city looks to fix Libby Hill Park
08/19/2008 9:21 AM by John M
The city has put out an RFP for “Libby Hill Park Slope Repairs” (PDF), a projected expected to cost between $500,000 and $1,000,000. From the RFP:
Project consists of but is not limited to providing the repair of the slope with back drain and geosynthetic material and geogrid reinforcement on Libby Hill Park at the corner of Main Street and Williamsburg Road. These repairs will enhance the aesthetics, safety, and pedestrian use of the park by way of the steps in this portion of the park. This will include the repair of the concrete steps and the installation of handrails.

Good grief! What about Chimbo Park?? The slopes, stairs, and paths are in way worse condition than Libby Hill Park!
well, they are spending money on CHIMBO PLAYGROUND…including, if I read the plans correctly, a valet for parking.
I have to agree that Chimbo park needs soem work…don’t more folks use that park than Libby?
Valet parking for a playground? That should be intresting…I always wanted someone to park my Big Wheel for me when I drove it to the park when I was a kid…
They are taking bids on the steps at the end of 32nd Street in Chimborazo Park (once they realized they get used quite regularly I think) so hopefully something will come of that soon enough.
and libby park is in the more ‘affluent’ area of church hill… so perhaps it is a higher priority for the city than chimbo…
personally- the recent times i’ve walked through libby… i don’t see much wrong with it.
Chimborazo was nearly destroyed thanks to Gaston and I think it has more to do with the city not realizing people actually use it quite regularly and love it.
I do want the city to improve all its parks and its playgrounds, however, I do wish they would be more fiscally responsible.
That playground is way over the top. How much money will it take to demolish 2 perfectly good basketball courts and then reinstall them? Then to terrace the lawn? And create a special shaded area for badonka donk or whatever that ball game is? Many of us actually play on, gasp…regular grass surfaces.
I am happy to see that Libby Hill park is being repaired. I am also happy that Chimborazo playground is being rebuilt…it’s been a long time coming. I am glad the city recognizes the need in both of these places and is going to act on it.
Whoa … let’s not kick good news from hill-to-hill and hill-to-dale!!
All the parks are important: Jefferson, Chimborazo Playground, Chimborazo itself, Libby, P. Henry, etc., etc. Lots of good work over the last year has been done in Jefferson and with the design of Chimbo Playground, the building of Chimborazo Dog Park, and with some tree plantings in most, if not all of the parks on the Hill.
If we need to focus on a park more than the other parks for more help or resources – let do that.
Please don’t pick on the park that getting support – as any improvements benefit everyone on the Hill. We will just work with the City folks and Rec and Parks to allocate and reallocate resources where most needed. Happy to work with anyone with a plan, idea and energy to make all the parks a better place to live.
Oh by the way, didn’t Chimborazo Park just start a Friends of Chimborazo Park in the last months or so…. How is that group doing and how many members does it have, when is their next meeting and what can I do to help – might be better a better focus.

When looking at Libby Park from Main St and Williamsburg Rd, you can see why these repairs need to be done. Glad to see the city is working on both parks.
Let’s not forget Taylor’s Hill Park, the open space below Richmond Hill and along 21st St. between Broad and Franklin. That hillside has been neglected all summer. It is a gateway to Church Hill along Franklin and is a real eyesore.
I hope everyone will be ready to work on the 18th of October on some sort of park project. The 18th of Oct 2008, is the Hands on Richmond – where communities dedicate up to five hours of work on a project or projects in their community.
Maybe we should nominate and/or pick these parks to be mowed, repaired and landscaped.
Would anyone like to volunteer to head up a project at on of the parks???

The work has already begun at the 2700 block of E. Franklin. They are replacing the sidewalk near the Mongo memorial.
