Arrest made in McCallum shooting
Richmond Police made an arrest last night in the Oct. 11 shooting of Haywood D. McCallum Jr. at North 25th and Cedar streets. Bobby Aaron Richardson, 19, of the 1800 block of Joplin Avenue is charged with malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Richardson was taken into custody by the Metro Richmond Fugitive Task Force.
McCallum remains in critical but stable condition at VCU Medical Center. Officers responding to a shooting call around 10:20 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, found McCallum suffering from gunshot wounds next to his vehicle. He apparently was the victim of a robbery attempt.
“This case was closed quickly with the assistance and cooperation of the community,” said Acting Police Major John Venuti. “We aggressively investigated this incident and moved quickly to take the shooter off the street.”
GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am one of the thousands of people who was touched and positively influenced by Woody McCallum. To know he is in such pain and may not survive due to a piece of scum like this is horrible. May your local justice system prosecute this disgusting individual to the fullest extent of the law and then some!!!
As has been discussed in other threads, the offender above is very young, a man-child.
Shooters are almost never over the age of 21 because most of them are already dead or in jail by that age. If they are older, they are out of jail from a previous/lesser offense.
Did he take his wallet? Why did he shoot? Just felt like it?
It seems like a lot of people from that just-north-of-Jefferson Davis area are committing violent crimes throughout Richmond more and more frequently. I would say that’s become the most dangerous area of the entire city, perhaps even more than the Gilpin area.
There are literally thousands of people praying for Haywood. As for the filth that was arrested and the thug at large – you can expect a number of amicus briefs being submitted for the harshest penalties possible.
As a friend of Woody’s, I hurt for what happened and keep him in my thoughts. To see such a young man arrested also breaks my heart. This was such a senseless act of cowardice.
how can someone have such little regard for human life? I hope Mr. Haywood gets better real quick.
fuck that that my cuz so fuck the police and that shit and he did not do that
Fuck that. We are sick of this shit. We have a voice. Fuck that, cuz.
John, can we (read: “you”) do something about the profanity here? This language is totally unacceptable. Reasonable and animated discourse among civilized people is one thing; Posts 9 & 11 are something else entirely. While such tripe may have a place on some street corners, it has no place here.
how eloquent! What a potty mouth…do you have something productive to add to this thread?
Zarina, IMHO all relatives seem to feel that their family members “didn’t do it”. And honestly, you got “maybe he knows more about the situation” from the post above yours? How?
Stretch, I don’t believe tiny meant any malice in his post. I think he was poking fun at post #9 for being so poetic.
he shot who think of as my dad, thank God he didn’t take him from me, one the person who saved my life when i was 18/19. God bless you “Mac”!

Comments 16-18 are what make me love Richmond.
I was on the jury that convicted Bobby for shooting Mr. Mac. The evidence against him was clear. It broke our hearts to send a young man up for 15 years, but he shot him in cold blood because he was no longer willing to pay him blackmail money. Bobby was the one that kept this going for 5 years trying to get money from Mr. Mac. When Mr. Mac said ‘No more’ he gunned him down in the street. Whatever their relationship was in the past, Mr. Mac did not deserve to be shot, period.
Bobby put on no defense, there were no extenuating circumstances or allegations of non-consensual abuse presented at any time. The testimony was that Bobby took advantage of an older man for money. That was not disputed; if there was more to it than that, Bobby should have insisted on testifying. The testimony was that when Mr. Mac found out that Bobby was under age, he ended their intimate relationship. That was not disputed. The blackmail started almost immediately. That was not disputed, either. Mr. Mac looked after Bobby and gave him a place to stay from time to time. That was not disputed, or made to be anything other than Mr. Mac being a caring person. There was also no evidence of even the possibility that anyone else pulled the trigger. He’s lucky Mr. Mac is still alive, or he’d have gotten a lot more.
So, Bobby was 14 when Mr. Mac started diddling him. Mr. Mac’s “help” for teenage boys seems to have ulterior motives — taking advantage of kids in a vulnerable situation. I’m not saying Bobby was an angel, but apparently neither was Mr. Mac.
@20 Juror #2, I am a little confused are you saying it is completely ok to abuse a child as long as it is consensual? Technically McCallum is guilty of molestation against a child. I don’t know if you were really on the jury, but if what you are saying is true, I’m really disappointed in Mr. McCallum, he was a teacher! You don’t have sex with children under no circumstances. I don’t care if they do agree.
Actually, he would have been guilty of statutory rape, among a series of other charges.
I was indeed on the jury. We were not trying Mr. Mac, we were trying Bobby. The testimony was that it was Bobby who took advantage of Mr. Mac by telling him he was of age when he was not, then blackmailing him for years. That testimony was not disputed by Bobby or his attorney. That being the case, regardless of what you think of the relationship, Mr. Mac thought Bobby was of age, and had no further intimate contact when he found out he was not. I do not excuse child molesters. If Bobby had reported Mr. Mac instead of shaking him down, I would have supported him in doing so. But given that he lied about his age to get Mr. Mac into a blackmail situation – a fact which was not disputed by either Bobby or his attorney at trial – then I had to judge on the facts as presented. There was no claim that the shooting was in any way related to their relationship. No ‘gay rage,’ no getting back at an abuser, not one word about any of that. Just that Mr. Mac had been a money train for years, and had cut him off. He STILL could have had him charged for past abuse if that’s what he had wanted, but he didn’t. He wanted money, and was willing to kill Mr. Mac to get it.
Here are some facts:
The first shot missed Mr. Mac and hit his car door. Bobby re-aimed and fired two shots into Mr. Mac’s chest. That is deliberate and willful. Afterward, he simply walked away. That is cold-blooded attempted murder.
McCallum knew Bobby’s age. Bobby not the first young boy he molested and he won’t be the last!!!!!
Again, McCallum was not on trial, and neither Bobby nor his lawyer disputed his account. And Bobby still blackmailed him rather than reported him, then shot him in cold blood and left him to die on the street when the money stopped coming. You could just as well say that Mac was probably not the first person Bobby had robbed or shot. Neither has any bearing on the charges we were trying. Have any of you commenting here ever been on a jury trying such serious charges? It was a gut-wrenching and heart-breaking experience. We were specifically vetted as to whether we could try the case without prejudice based on the nature of their prior relationship. Potential jurors who could not get beyond it were dismissed.
And Mr. Mac could still be charged with past offenses if anyone complains or files charges and is willing to testify against him. This case was absolutely independent of that. I encourage any of you out their who have such information to do just that. I do not condone or excuse such behavior. But do not second-guess us as resposible, dedicated, civic-minded, fair jurors or presume to understand what this process was like just because you think you know something we were not even allowed to consider.
I’ve got a few things to say. First, is this the first time it’s come out that McCallum was molesting/engaging in sexual relations with this boy (or any boys)? If so, that’s a pretty shocking revelation. While he may have been told by Bobby that he was of age, it’s not hard to tell that someone is 14 vs. 18 years old. It seems to me it was more of a “OK, if you tell me you’re 18, I’ll ‘believe’ you” type of thing. While he shouldn’t have been gunned down and Bobby should be charged with his crime, it makes me feel a slight bit of sympathy for him. I know he set McCallum up and it was supposedly consensual, but that is a young age to be faced with that kind of situation.
Secondly, comment 18 really bothers me. I know people come on many of the Richmond blogs and type in all caps, using “ebonics” and claiming that criminals are not guilty of their crimes. I’ve seen at least five, and probably more than ten instances of it. Still, post 18 is so unbearably condescending with its “pray tell,” etc. that I would love to just punch the author right in the face. And I’m not a violent guy, either. Anytime one of these posts surfaces, its almost always met with similar condescension by someone.
Mr. McCallum went forward with his testimony knowing that it would bring great embarrassment to him. That was one thing that made it so compelling. I agree that it strains credulity to think that he had no inkling Bobby was underage, but his was the only testimony we heard regarding that relationship, and it went undisputed. And as I said, there was no assertion that that part of the relationship was in any way the reason for the shooting. I, and the other jurors, tried to have sympathy for Bobby. But the cold hard facts are that Bobby kept coming around on his own for years, shaking him down for money, and after missing with the first shot he re-aimed and shot him twice, then calmly walked away. Bobby was very lucky Mr. M did not die, or he might have been on trial for capital murder.
Being molested by alduts who should protect and teach you, can make a child into a killer.
I agree. But AGAIN, no such allegation was even hinted at during the trial. The idea that Bobby manipulated (an albeit willing) Mr. McCallum went undisputed. He came of not as an innocent, but as a street hustler who deliberately manipulated Mr. M so that he could blackmail him. Mr. M’s assertion that they only had physical contact one time went unchallenged. What would you suggest that we, as jurors, should have done? We were only allowed to consider what was presented to us. No information about any ongoing abuse or damage therefrom was even remotely alleged. Have you ever been on a jury? Do you even know how it works?
Juror # 2 I have to ask myself why you posted the details of the trial. You put the details out there so everyone would know that Mr. Mac as you call him, had sex with a child/youth, only to turn around and defend him. What’s your real motive here? You act as if you’re taking up for Mr. Mac, but what you are really doing is tarnishing his character. Do you think parents would trust this man around their children now? Maybe this is your way of punishing him for what he did; I know I could never feel relaxed with him being around youth again.
YOU NEED TO FALL BACK BITCH ASS NIGGA. YOU KNOW YO BROTHA WAS A FAGGOT ASS QUEER THAS HE KEPT COMIN BACK FO MORE BUT THIS TIME HE WAS TRICKIN FO MONEY. SO GET OFF THAT BS ABOUT YOU KNOWING HIM YOU HIS BROTHA YOU SAY THE BEST THANG TO MAKE THAT FAGGOT YOU CALL YO BROTHA SEEM LIKE SOMETHIN HE AINT. THAT COWARD AINT GOT NO PIECE IN THE PENN SO HE JUST GONE PLAY HIS REGULAR ROLE OF A BITCH AS HO. WHEN HE GETS OUT HE WILL ALREADY HAVE ADVANCED TRAINING AND B READY FO THE TRACK. WOULD YOU STILL HAVE SOMETHING GOOD TO SAY ABOUT HIM THEN.UHUH IM SURE YOU BE PROUD. OH, WHEN YOU VISIT HIM IN THE PENN GIVE HIM MANY BARS OF SOAP HE GONE THANK YOU.
@Neighbor –
If you read all of the posts, not just mine, you will see much stronger language used by others to describe both Mr. M and his actions than I am willing to use. I called him Mr. Mac because that is what they called him at trial and it seemed that was how he was known. If you actually read my posts, I am generally responding to other posters’ comments about Mr. M – THEY called him a child molester; I said he was taken advantage of by a street hustler. As I said, his testimony that he thought Bobby was 18 was undisputed. He has been a victim in this situation from his first encounter with Bobby. Think of what it took for him to come forward, knowing that his reputation would be tarnished, in order to get justice for this brutal attack. And not trusting Mr. M around your children would, to me, be more a matter of prejudice than logic.
The details of the trial are a matter of public record. I am not telling tales out of school here; they are available for anyone to see.
By the way, I have talked to five of the other jurors, and all of us were deeply saddened and feel traumatized by our experience on this trial. The whole situation was disturbing.
Hello sweet heart! I am James Woolfolk’s oldest neice! So I assume when you say Woody, you are reffering to him! First the comment of he was crooked, and yall didn’t really know him, naw! You really didn’t know him! It’s nobody fault that some how someone two members of your family either attempted or did take someone live! Regardless of the fact of how you feel about how crooked either my uncle or Mr. Mac is/ was or will be, your cousin, and brother are worst! You know the saying people in glass houses should not throw stones! At the end of the day you look real stupid at the comments that you have made! Don’t be ignorant all your life, no one is perfect we all make mistakes! Don’t let the mistake of speaking bad about James W. Woolfolk III happen again!
