Under the Viaduct (circa 1935)
A portion of the Valentine Richmond History Center collection has been digitized and is available for your perusal, and includes the circa 1935 image above, Under the Viaduct (one of 74 images by Charles W. Smith).
The Collection Database is a searchable database of objects from the permanent collection of the Valentine Richmond History Center. An individual object record includes information and images, when available.
The Museum’s staff have selected several objects of note within the Collection Database as highlights of the collection and the Database will continue to be a work in progress. Objects and their images are being added regularly from a variety of collections and object types.
Due to the large number of objects in the History Center’s permanent collection, less than 5 % of the History Center’s collection is currently viewable online. However, updates will occur, so be sure to check back from time to time. Furthermore, information contained in the record is, in some cases, incomplete, and all information is subject to change according to ongoing research.
Is that the Marshall Street viaduct? I wish that and the Carver Viaduct along with its train system were still intact.
I assume (&hope) so. The Marshall Street viaduct was built 1910 or 1911, so the time is right, and the scene doesn’t look like what I’ve seen of the Carver viaduct.
Could be the Fifth Street Viaduct into Northside, too, I guess.
Wherever it is, it is beautiful.
Thanks for posting it, John.
By the look of the architecture of the houses, it looks very much like the houses that used to line 17th St. in Shockoe Valley, right under the Viaduct.
i believe thats a wood carving
I do believe you are right (Liberty re: wood carving)
The scene is quaint and lovely, but has since been improved upon with Tiki Bob’s 10 cent tacos, and bikini night.
