A good neighbor, a fixture here in the Church hill area and volunteer at St.John’s Church, Danny Athans has died. Danny worked with Ed Harris at St. John’s Realty back in the day then took over the company when Ed died. Danny ran and owned(?) St.John’s until his death. St. John’s Realty has been our neighborhood cottage industry since anyone can remember.
No obituary in the RTD yet, it seems.
Danny died??? I’m dumbfounded, and, of course, saddened. I first met Danny up here in the early 1990’s. As you say, he’s been a fixture. We weren’t close, but it was always good to see him in the ‘hood, chat about the real estate market, and share a handshake. I’ll miss him a lot. 🙁
So sad. 🙁 There will be a service for him in Chesapeake this weekend I believe, and there will be an in town memorial in the Spring. What a wonderful man he was; he will be missed terrible by so many.
Danny’s untimely death is a complete surprise. We miss you already, Brother-
I am still stunned over Danny’s death. Danny loved this neighborhood. He made it his life’s work and he was passionate about it. He was one of Church Hill’s biggest advocates, and was one of the people responsible for getting this new influx of people into Church Hill (for better or for worse…ha ha…sorry, Danny). In fact, most people who read this blog will be sending their rent checks to St. John’s Realty on Monday morning. He was more than fair to those lessees who were on hard times, allowing rent to go late without any fees. I’ve seen him give dollars (not just pocket change) to that homeless lady that comes around our neighborhood COUNTLESS TIMES. He rang the bell on Sundays at St. Johns church, and when I told him that I slept in on Sundays just a block away, he would ring it harder to try to get me up and into church. Danny was a man of considerable faith who believed in the hereafter and was certain he would be with his maker when his time came. If his idea of the universe was correct, he is where he always knew he would be. We will miss him around the way. This is such a sad week on the Hill.
Right on James. Very well said.
Danny passed away? I know it is probably a breach of eiquette to ask, but does anyone know what happened? He was too young.
His obit is in the Virginia Pilot Ledger: http://www.legacy.com/PilotOnline/Obituaries.asp?Page=LifeStory&PersonId=123441388

I heard that there will be a memorial for Danny in the spring up here in the hill. He was the FIRST person to welcome me to Church Hill when my husband and I moved here 14 months ago! Unreal that we won’t see him on the barstool anymore. Tragic.
A friend of mine just told me about the sad news of Danny Athans. I met Danny in 1976 and we were very close for two crazy years. We lived together at VCU, Pine St, Grove Ave. and Ellwood Ave. We shared many good times together and he was instrumental in my development as a young man. We lost touch years ago but I always thought I would have time to look him up and check in eventually. I am so sorry for his friends and family…..
Word of the street is there’s a memorial service for Danny at St. John’s this Saturday. True?
