Orienteering meet draws wide range of competitors

Thirty-two teams signed up to compete in the Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities’ first orienteering meet, which was held February 21 in Chimborazo Park. They consisted of families, children, and adults, all of varying skill levels ranging from the first-time novices to regular competitors. Competitors came from as far away as Baltimore.

Orienteering is the sport of navigating from point to point with a map and a compass and making decisions to complete a course in the least amount of time. It is often referred to as “the thinking sport.”

“It was great to see each contestant running in to the finish and trying to shave those last few seconds off their time,” said Christy Everson, who is with the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities. “Clearly everyone enjoyed being out in the park and enjoyed the mental as well as the physical challenges of the meet.”

With some introductory instruction from Timothy P. Gilbert of the Quantico Orienteering Club, who managed the meet, and Wyatt Kingston of Richmond Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities, who organized it, every competitor was able to find all 20 stations and complete the 2.2 km course.
