A new book on our City Old and Historic Districts
05/20/2009 6:35 AM by John M
The Historic Richmond Foundation is working with Jack Zehmer and photographer Richard Cheek to produce a sequel/update to Marguerite Crumley and Zehmer’s out-of-print 1991 survey Church Hill: the St. John’s Church Historic District. The new book is slated to be published in spring 2010, and will include information about the St.John’s, Shockoe Valley, Church Hill North, and Chimborazo Park Old and Historic Districts.
Hooray! More information to help me on my research! I hate the name “Church Hill North” especially since most of it already had another name.
I will add, I hate the name Church Hill North for the neighborhoods further north to Nine Mile, but it works for an old and historic district. St. John’s isn’t the name of the neighborhood so.. those don’t have to match.

I personally don’t see anything wrong with our area being called Church Hill North. It was given that designation when it was listed on the Historic Registry – describing Church Hill “North” of Broad. I believe the same was attempted back in the 1980s but met with opposition due to gentrification issues and the fact that “St John’s” didn’t want anything to do with “north” at the time.
What were the “other” names you are referring to? The area running from approximatly 28th Street on to the creek was considered Shed Town but in the 1860s was annexed as part of Church Hill.
