You can give a City of Richmond child the opportunity to enjoy summer camp by contributing to the Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities’ Send a Kid to Camp Campaign.

The department, in partnership with Radio One and Miss Community Clovia, is inviting citizens to help Richmond’s children by sending a child to camp this summer.

“This is an opportunity for citizens to have a real impact on our children’s lives by making sure they have something positive to do this summer,” said J.R. Pope, director of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities. “We had a great response from the community last year and believe that we will receive the same support this year.”

“Even though the fees for our summer camps are nominal, there are still many families in the City of Richmond that can’t afford them, especially during these tough economic times,” said Roz Johnson, the department’s deputy director. “We’re in the business of saving lives one child at a time, and the funds from the radiothon will help us reach more children.”

The department provides a nine week summer camp for children ages 6 – 12. The camp program, Great Summer Escape “Adventure through Time,” runs June 22 – Aug. 21 from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The day camp is offered at 22 locations and costs $225 per child with breakfast and lunch provided free by the USDA Summer Meals for Kids Program.

Activities include: structured recreation, games, cultural arts, athletics, swimming, golf, tennis, trips, entertainment, learning and playground activities as well as mini instructional camps. In addition, one hour of reading and one hour of math will be provided each day based on a curriculum designed by Virginia State University.

Citizens may contribute any amount they wish, and all donations are tax deductible. Contributions can be made on the department’s website or by sending a check payable to RRPF/Send a Kid to Camp to the Richmond Recreation and Parks Foundation, Richmond Landmark Theater, 6 N. Laurel St., Room 304, Richmond, VA 23220.
