A house painter?
06/30/2009 9:48 AM by John M
A reader asks: “I’m looking for a house painter who won’t run off with my money or fall of a ladder while he’s drunk and sue me. Got any suggestions?”
TAGGED: question
I highly recommend Joe Lajoie. He did a great job at my house, and at a neighbors. He’s honest, reasonably priced, a good worker – and funny!
You can check out his site at: http://www.lajoieinc.com/
hey John,
I have a great house painter. Affordable, reliable, and not prone to falling off ladders. Overall, a fine gentleman. I’ll send you an email with his info.
Urban Painters, right here in Church Hill. You can find their add regularly in the CHNews letter. Husband and wife team and they did a great job on my house, and handled CAR since we were changing the colors slightly and I live in an O&H district.
dang, that rules me out. On both counts
Hi John – I highly recommend Bill Alvis. He’s a good guy, with very affordable rates. He’s done several projects here at “Shackalicious” and we’ve been pleased. 804-428-8627, wswbalvis@hotmail.com
Yep – Bill’s the guy! Great work – a husband and wife team. Good people.
John
Try contacting John Moosa. He’s a good, professional painter. His number is 804-615-2221
Yes, I second John Moossa. He is an extremely interesting guy. He did a great job on my house. he is also a musician and a fellow W&M graduate (my alma mater). His prices are great and so is his presence. I trusted him completely in my and around my house.
I hire & fire contractors for a living try:
Stewart Lee

Very good quality
Alan Schintzius is a superior, reliable and affordable painter. You can see examples of his work all around the Fan District and most notably at The Camel on Broad St. across from Lowe’s. Alan meticulously restored the neglected storage space below WRIR’s studio into the gorgeous exterior and interior performance/gathering space of The Camel.
I don’t know if he is already booked with painting projects but would be the first person I’d call if I was looking to hire a professional painter. I’m going to check with him before I post his phone # on CHPN but will soon post contact info. for anyone interested in getting a quote from Alan for painting, etc.
We third Moosa… great guy, pleasant, kind, professional and trustworthy.
William Bulifant at AFAB Handyman Service. That’s Anything for a Buck. Have used him on various projects over the years and he’s honest & dependable. Tell him Stretch sent ya. 804-397-6254.
I second Alicia’s recommendation for Joe Lajoie. He did an excellent job, and, as Alicia said, he’s honest, a good worker, and funny.
I have Doug Moening working at my house right now. He has done a fabulous job and is very reasonable. You can reach him best at 804-241-8691
Of the painters I’ve used Brad Jennings is the best by far. He’s a solo painter who shows up on time, comes in on budget, sober, and the finished job looks great.
The number I have for him is 230-4762 and he lives in the East End.
I second Urban Painters! They are great (and there’s the added bonus of acting locally by supporting a neighborhood business).

Well at this point I’m sure you’ve hired someone but if you’re ever in need again, call Paint Virginia, the service is great and the price is reasonable. All the employees are very professional.
Definitely wouldn’t recommend Alvis painting. Doesn’t stand behind his work. Very unprofessional, and sloppy.
Anyone know of someone who does interior window storms for noise reduction?
Laura #20, I might know of someone – I’ll post back when I have exact contact information.
Wayne the painter is very professional and reasonably priced. call him 804.385.3849
Lisa #20, here’s the information I have about interior storm windows. They are generally made of plexi or some similar material (I guess lexan would be similar). The company that did interior storm windows for the 2300 Club on East Grace Street was Thermo-press, also known as Norvell Awning. They are in the phone book as being located at 1735 Arlington Road, which I am told is off the Boulevard. The phone number listed for them is 355-9147. I haven’t looked for a web site, but the person I talked to, who USED to do interior storms, said to contact them. I’m hoping that the listing in the phone book is still current – if not, try googling for a web site in case they have moved.
Also, the person I talked to has had interior storms on an old house up here for thirty years, and swears by them, if that is any help for you. Good luck!
Sorry, I meant to address Laura #20 when I posted #23. My apologies.
crd #23 Thanks so much for that information. I’ll contact them. I’m mostly looking for a sound barrier.
Laura, my friend who has them says they do provide some sound barrier, as well as insulation during the hot or cold weather. You might call the 2300 Club and ask if theirs are still in place at this time of year, and see if they will let you in to see for yourself.
Laura #20, another company you might try is Allied Storm Windows (I don’t have the www address handy, but I know they have a good website). The do both interior and exterior storms for historic buildings. Thermo-press is good also, and may be more of a local company…always good to stay local when you can!
I would use Molinas Handyman Service for any of your painting, drywall, or historical plaster. He gives great prices and does great work (804) 385-9618

Does anyone have a working phone number for Rodas Painting? The phone numbers on their van (parked on 27th Street last week,) are out of date.
They’ve done lots of work up here in the neighborhood, if anyone has a contact or info to share, I’d love to get that. Thanks!
Commonwealth Painting (Bill Rose and his crew) have been doing an awesome job painting trim on my house this week. Scraping every bit of old paint off–repairing rotten wood–caulking, priming–removing storm windows to get to the frames. So happy we went with these guys. Very careful workers with attention to detail–high up on the ladders, too. Worth every penny.
