Fairhills infested with roaches, mold
07/22/2009 8:22 PM by John M
wtvr has a gruesome video detailing the roach, mold, and other issues at the Fairhills Apartments on Coalter Street (up the hill with Mosby Central).
This is despicable, but also an example of your tax dollars at work. Did you catch it: Government subsidized housing? If the government is this good at administering housing, just think how great the health care plan is going to be. Our community has to break this cycle of government dependence.
Our subsidized roads, libraries, defense, postal service, and education (k-12 & public university systems) work fairly well, though. The fact is that many Americans don’t have health insurance or are paying a disproportionate amount of their income to be able have health insurance, and something needs to be done about it. Some people are poor. Helping the needy among us does not have to foster government dependence.
You’re right about the goal, but wrong about the way to accomplish it. Take a look at this article by Star Parker entitled “We’re Moving Back To Uncle Sam’s Plantation” I think you’ll see that we’re worsening the living conditions of the people we should be helping. Then again you’re likely not to agree, but it doesn’t make it less true. Government run housing is a failed social experiment. Please don’t defend it.

Wow so off topic…
I think Fair Hills should be demolished and a new neighborhood overlooking the valley should be built, reopening the streets that used to be there. The apartments sit on which hill again? Maddox?
Interestingly, there was fire at Fairhills last night and today there is a very big fire at Fairhills.
@Houdon – FWIW Fairhills is privately owned, not public housing. It is my understanding that the “government subsidized” part of this is that is Section 8. & your link above was all opinion, I would’ve hoped for something a bit more rigorous from you. If you’ve got a better read than that, send it my way, you’ve got my email.
I agree with #2 that the government generally does a pretty good job of providing us with quality services (roads, schools, post offices, museums, libraries, parks, historical sites, sporting / concert venues, etc.)
But I also agree with Houdon that government sponsored public housing – while perhaps well intentioned – often causes more harm than good.
As for Fairhills, doesn’t government subsidized / Section 8 ultimately have a similar impact on a neighborhood as full blown housing “projects” would? The first few paragraphs of Houdon’s link in #3 seem very relevant to the topic, if you ask me.
the reason roaches get a foothold in a building is because someone is a total slob, leaves food out, dosent clean their dishes and dosent take their garbage out. It just takes one bad apartment to infest the whole building.
I’ve been in apartments that had full supercans IN THE KITCHEN. Yeah, that’s how you get roaches.
