RVA TV roundtable on the future of Church Hill
08/03/2009 1:55 PM by John M
Jon at RVA TV is setting up “a roundtable talk about Church Hill’s future” for next week. Drop a line to jon@rvamag.com if you are interested in being a part of this.
TAGGED: RVA TV
Probably the dumb question, wondering if this is in fact on TV? I have more of a radio voice (if you know what I mean).
They are video but web video and not broadcast video.
This is for RVA TV, an online video production for RVA Magazine’s website. We’re doing a Welcome to RVA series which focuses on each of the neighborhoods, looking at the history, transportation, and future of the area.
This roundtable discussion will be on the future of Church Hill; the present issues that will define the neighborhood in the future, as well as a general discussion of how the neighborhood should move forward in the 21st century.
Church Hill is the first neighborhood we’re covering, and as such, it’s all a little up in the air. If anyone has any suggestions for location, or topics that should be covered, don’t hesitate to contact me.
I’m a new church hill resident and don’t have much information to offer. Is this a discussion I could participate in to learn more?
There should be no reason to restrict access. It’s my hope that doing these types of discussions in all the neighborhoods will inspire more social responsibility and neighborhood pride.
At the moment, the big issue for Church Hill is the gentrification of the neighborhood, along with possible mixed-use developments, and the possibility of bringing the trolley back to Richmond (the trolley system was invented here, afterall).
The Echo Harbour development isn’t specifically a part of Church Hill, but I’m sure it too will come up in the discussion, along with reactions to the city’s Downtown Master Plan.
I’d like to remain behind the camera, so I’m also looking for someone capable of leading the discussion (but I’ll lead it if necessary).
Count the folks of Tricycle Gardens in! And may I suggest the Robinson Theatre as a venue?
The Robinson Theatre sounds like a wonderful venue – we could get participants on stage, and those who would just like to attend in the seats.
Education is a critical, but largely overlooked, issue in our neighborhood — especially considering the recent shooting in front of Chimborazo Elementary. Hope you include this in the mix. Glad to hear you’re doing this series.
Some of what’s mentioned here isn’t even in Church Hill, but in Union Hill. Difficult to talk about a neighborhood and its future without knowing where it is.
Here’s a topic:
Is Church Hill just St. John’s as the St. John’s folks like to think, or is it “greater Church Hill” as the old timers considered it, going all the way up to Fairmount?
#9… in regards to Union Hill./ Oakwood/ Chimborazo../ St. John’s.. isn’t this all part of great Church Hill
Or do the new people need a lesson in the neighborhood?
This will lead back to the days of NOB and SOB.
These are all great questions/issues, and I hope people get involved with the panel discussion, and make it a productive endeavor. Speaking of the panel – Who do you want to see on the panel?
Furthermore, what day/evening of the week would work best for this event? I was thinking about Thursday 8/13/09, but perhaps Tuesday or Wednesday of that week would work better.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
Please folks don’t start with the picking, defining and sub-dividing CH according to one’s perspective or we will have 300 different CH’s. We are working with RVA to give them a total overview and outlook on ALL of CH, including and beginning with a pre-tour of all the neighborhoods in the CH area, so that there is an understanding of the diverse and socially rich community we live in and the dynamic needs and opportunities of our total community.
Your input and comments are welcome, appreciated and needed to design the best and most accurate understanding of CH. Let us all try and formulate our comments in positive and constructive ways so we move forward and not slide backwards.
Forward is definitely the direction of this piece. The goal of the panel discussion is to discuss of the future of the community, not it’s divided past. It’s my hope that the greater Church Hill community will be able to move forward into a better future, starting with this panel discussion.
It’s looking like Thursday 8/13 will be the date that this happens. John Sarvay, of the blog, Buttermilk and Molasses, has agreed to moderate it, and I’ve gotten the Robinson Theatre from 6pm-9pm (with the discussion taking place from 7pm-8:30pm).
The only complicating factor is raising the $300 to cover facility costs. Does anyone have any suggestions for Church Hill businesses/organizations/groups who might be able to help sponsor the event?
Thank you to all who are participating in setting this up. I hope it will start a trend of greater cooperation in making Richmond a place for the future, not just a massive historical landmark.
I’m currently working on creating the panel members (I’m thinking 4-8 person panel). I’m trying to gather questions for the moderator to present to the panel, so regardless of whether you can make it or not, if you would like to see a question posed to the panel, please send it to jon@rvamag.com.
Thank You.
