Franklin Military Academy junior will launch Teen Trendsetters mentoring program

Toneisha Brown, a junior at Franklin Military Academy, has been chosen to launch the Teen Trendsetter Reading Mentor program at the city’s public military high school. Brown is one of 30 students from across the southern United States selected for this school year to head up the reading programs in their communities.

Beginning this school year, 15 Franklin Military Academy cadets will serve as one-on-one reading mentors to students at Chimborazo Elementary School. Miss Brown received an all-expenses paid trip last month to Orlando, Florida, to attend a national training summit sponsored by Volunteer USA Foundation, which manages the Teen Trendsetter mentoring program.Captain Lachecia Caine, an English teacher at Franklin Military Academy, serves as the program advisor. She also attended the training session held in Orlando.

Along with training, Volunteer USA Foundation also provides a curriculum, 15 take-home books for each mentee and a stipend for the adult advisor. The program, first launched in Florida in 2002, now operates in 11 states, including: Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.
