City Council agenda for 9/14

The agenda for the September 14 City Council meeting and meeting calendar (PDF) is now available.
TAGGED: city council
“8. Ord. No. 2009-158 (Patron: Mayor Jones) – To *** execute the First
Amendment to Management Agreement between the City and RPAC, Inc.
to extend until March 1, 2013 the period during which RPAC, Inc. will
provide for the day-to-day management of the Landmark Theater.
(Recommendation from Organizational Development to Continue) ”
And so it goes…Center Stage takes control of Landmark
#1/Scott Burger:
Why did Center Stage turn it’s back on Broad St? I know that they ran out of money, but am I missing something? They didn’t do Broad St. any favors considering that planners envision that thoroughfare as the gateway to downtown.
Haven’t been in the renovation – plan to go to the open house tomorrow, but I assume that the backstage is facing Broad St. Still, a big glass atrium entrance on Broad that connected with the Carpenter entrance would have been better design.
Then there’s the big empty lot on Broad being made into a park, possibly? How about an outdoor concert area/park for fair weather gigs with one of those white pavilion tents they use in Portsmouth and Charlottesville?
Scott,
The ordinance just extends the agreement reached more than 18 months, during which the new management has cut the city’s operating subsidy for the Landmark by about 75-80%. Laura, you’re right, but this is a result of the Wilder war on the Performing Arts Center. The significant scale-back refocused on Grace, and not Broad. However, we now have the newly refurbished Marriott and the Hilton Gardens complex on Broad and Fifth, so the block is looking up.
