Court Watch dates for code violators (including Oliver Lawrence)
In what appears to be an increased focus on holding the owners of dilapidated property accountable, court dates over the next 3 months for more than 30 offenders across the city were released yesterday. Notable are Oliver Lawrence’s days on October 23rd and 26th. Locally, the list includes addresses on North 35th Street, North 24th Street, Carlisle Avenue, and Williamsburg Road (though Lawrence’s 100+ violations are not specified).

Call to arms folks!
I went to three civic association meetings earlier this month. Each one featured a police officer report or a citizens complaint about activity in/or around properties that were Lawrence’s. Drug use/sales, prostitution, and the homeless camping out in them.
I’ve been compiling letters from residents around his properties, police reports directly related to his properties and photos of these houses to put a ‘face’ to the problem and show that the condition of his properties is contributing to crime and blight in our neighborhoods.
I’ll be taking those into court, reading from a few if permitted, and asking if they can be made a part of the record.

Deanna has a excellent idea, but don’t leave it to her. The more people the better.
And if you live in a district that has Oliver Lawrence blighted property, ask your city council member to attend court as well and make a presentation to the judge.
RE: #3 – Here ya go. I don’t have a lot of time this morning to streamline into presentation form – and these pasted kind of funny – but here are the houses that came up when I just did a tax search for Oliver Lawrence in the City of Richmond. Happened to be in the tax records for something else for work, but this is a system that is also available to all citizens through the City of Richmond site.

Don”t dump this on someone else. Go to the city’s website.(www.richmondgov.com) On the home page, you will see a choice for assessments, and other property data.(left hand column) Select, then follow the prompts. You’ll get virtually everything the city knows abou that address.

If you live near there and those houses are frequented by drug dealers, prostitution and assorted crime, or you just want to vent about the condition please send me an email describing the activities. If not, I’ll stop by and talk to the neighbors.
A heads up on what is going on in the neighborhood would be nice. Yesterday I was one door away from a house that was home to several hookers who often tend to the gentlemen who smoke crack and shoot up in Oliver’s house. If it had not been for the neighbor who answered her door I would have been at their house next. They might have not taken kindly to my questioning since my goal is to put them out of business.
The only squatters we had in the houses on 27th street were a pride of ferral cats. After my neighbors and I called the city a few times, they came out and boarded the broken windows up.
Deanna, I hope you are coordinating this activism with the City attorney prosecuting the cases. From experience, many of the first return dates are just first appearances and often no evidence is taken from neighbors or anyone until subsequent dates. The judges do respond to neighborhood folks, so be sure to let the prosecutor know you are there.
I emailed the City attorney but no reply yet. If I do not get a reply by the court date I’ll pull him/her aside when I am there and let them know what I have to offer.

Wow. Today is 11 addresses with Show Causes for Oliver Lawrence, and Monday is 100 + violations for him, too. Something has to give with this guy, hopefully in the court appearances today and Monday. Post when you get back from court, please, Deanna or whoever goes, thanks.
I’ll be going Monday. Det. Lano is working on matching reports/arrests to some properties here in the 7th for me and I’ve got letters from residents to submit too. I’m sure it will be a long morning.

Hello all. I do not believe that anything will be done about this man because as I explained to Deanna in a personal email I had a relative living in one of his Magnolia Apartments where h;er steps were so in need of repair. Some of the steps were even missing. The steps were reported and nothing was done to fix them. The elderly woman then fell down the stairs due to the stair breaking on her and she went down about 8 steps. She was taking by ambulance to the hospital and by the time she got back, the steps were new and improved. Then I complained when my relative was living there to every last city official you can name. They did absolutely nothing. I contacted the Attorney General, the city inspector and other city officials and nothing was done. I really hope there will be justice.
