History Hounds explore Church Hill

Dogs are invited to join their owners for this of Church Hill, in partnership with the SPCA. Dogs must have current shots, mix well with others and remain on a leash. Owners are responsible for water and cleaning up after their dogs. The SPCA will provide bags.

Reservations are required: (804) 649-0711 ext. 301. Space is limited. Meet your guide at Patrick Henry Park, across from St. John’s Church, at E. Broad and 25th streets. $10

City Council Formal Meeting

Every 2nd and 4th Mon – Responsible for deciding official Council action, which includes discussing, adopting, rejecting, and amending laws and approving the budget. Formal meetings include a time for pubic comment and are televised live on the local PBS station and are replayed in Richmond on Government Access Channel 17, beginning at Noon and 7:00 p.m. daily.

Richmond’s Unhealed History

Richmond Hill presents “Richmond’s Unhealed History,” 1607-2009, nine lectures on the history of Richmond, on Tuesday nights from September 22 to November 17 at 7:30 p.m. The lectures are by the Rev. Ben Campbell, Pastoral Director of Richmond Hill. Requested donation for the series is $90. Those attending are encouraged to join the Richmond Hill Community for prayers at 6 p.m. And supper at 6:30 p.m. An additional $45 will reserve a place at supper. Virginia History and Archives Fair at the Museum of the Confederacy

Museum admission is free to attendees and includes a talk by Brian Daugherity on civil rights research in Virginia archives.

Archives Month Open House

Come celebrate archives month by taking a tour of the Virginia State Archives or the Museum of the Confederacy Archives. Book talk, reception, and Behind-the-Scenes tours of the archives at the Library of Virginia, from 1:30 to 3, and the Museum of the Confederacy, from 3:30-5.

Reservations required for tours. Author Bruce Chadwick will talk about his book, “I am Murdered,” about the death of George Wythe, at noon at the Library of Virginia.

Hallowe’en Graveyard Tour

Commemorate Hallowe’en with a walking tour through the graveyard at St. John’s Church. Docents will lead tours every twenty minutes, and will discuss the symbolism and history of the graveyard. Meet the spirits of important Virginians laid to rest in the graveyard, including George Wythe, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and Elizabeth Arnold Poe, the birth mother of Edgar Allan Poe. Tickets are $5.00 a person, $15.00 per family.
