#1 ES, I think this is an original gas light. The city doesn’t put them in any more, they put in fake ones that are actually electric – look on Broad Street outside Nolde condos, they are installed there. You could ask for those to be installed in the blocks you are interested in and you might have a chance. Try calling or emailing our recently installed council person, perhaps she can help (that is NOT meant sarcastically).
Actually, I think this is one of the newer electric lights. The lamp is tucked into the top of the fixture (note the glass inside the enclosure) and it illuminates the fake “mantles” where the gas would normally come out of.
Gas mantles are not usually that close to each other for obvious reasons.
The guy that maintains the gas lamps works weekends doing it. I was told he was paid OT to do it because of a hiring freeze.
Very nice. The 300 blocks of Church Hill/Chimborazo could use more of these.
