it’s also the law to keep your dogs on a leash, my dogs almost got attacked while we were walking them, on leashes, by a dog on someone’s front porch, who ran across the street.
AND this also means in Jefferson Park, the dog park is at Chimbarozo!!
I am in total aggreeance on the aspect of picking up the poo your dog leaves on, or near the sidewalk where people will be traveling. When it comes to abandoned lots or areas where no one in their mind would go, well I’m gonna leave it be (good fertilizer). As for the leash thing. My dogs act like their on a leash when their not even on one so why apply that type of restraint? It would only encourage the opposite behavior. I walk them to the park and walk them back and they go maybe 20 feet from me. The deal is if you purchase a dog than your responsibility is to train the dog, not just feed and shelter the animal, which sometimes doesn’t happen anyway…As for dogs attacking your dog, I hate that happened, but that doesn’t mean that a physical restraint should be applied to all dogs. I’m also speaking about a mix lab and border collie which are not known for their tempers, which is good to keep in mind. I really enjoy showing my neighbors how well behaved they are and enjoy teaching youth how to look for body language from dogs. The kids in CH can see their temperament and learn how to put out a flat hand, and not approach the dog without letting the dog come to them. These processes help erase all this negative attention from lack of knowledge and experience with dogs that have gotten a little out of hand.
Burg…. All dogs need to be on a leash because it is the law too. I think it is wonderful that your dogs are well behaved. However, you need to take into consideration that some dogs react differently to other dogs and people.
Most of all, not all PEOPLE are cool with dogs being off leash. It is your responsibility to be considerate of others.( and their possible fear/comfort with dogs)
@ #3, dude, i think you’re really assuming too much risk with your dogs-off-leash-teach-kids-how-to-interact thing.
Fwiw, dog crap is NOT fertilizer. And their pee is acid that kills plants (like that liriope in the tree wells your neighbor planted last fall.) Dogs aren’t cows or horses, they don’t eat grass. their crap is crap; not manure fit for fertilizing plants.
Get real, dude, you live in a city with lots of folks. Dogs are important; I love dogs, but dogs behave unpredictably under city stress (it’s not their fault!). I know too many folks who’ve been bitten in CH by dogs that were other people’s pets.
Also, Burg, while your dogs may not have “tempers,” other dogs are not so pleasant. Some on-lash dogs are intimidated by being approached by off leash dogs and might lash out because of fear. I have friends with dog aggressive dogs and they are very responsible in walking them on a short leash and always in their control. When another dog trots up to them off leash, bad things might happen. That’s the fault of the owner who thinks their dog doesn’t need a leash, although I’m sure they’d be outraged.
1) Dog Poo. Stepping in it has ruined a few of my days this year on 21st St. Sidewalks overgrown with grass are still walked upon, dog owners. And just because it is a chihuahua, doesn’t mean the poop doesn’t need to be cleaned up.
2) Unleashed dogs. Perhaps your dog is perfectly behaved when not restrained. Maybe someone else believes the same thing of their dog…
I witnessed a nasty dog fight when a jogger waiting to cross the street asked a woman to leash her dog as they approached him and his dog. She ignored his request, her dog ran up to his leashed dog and a loud dog quarrel ensued, ending up with the jogger having a bloody hand and both dogs with injuries.
The last thing I heard as I was bitten from behind by I dog I didn’t even see was, “It’s ok, he’s friendly!”
A friend and I were just talking about this kind of thing while we were walking our dogs the other day, and what a nuisance off-leash dogs can be, especially when their owners are in denial about the stress that can cause for other people.
A great place to let your dog run free is in the country, where you have a couple-few acres of land, and the right to do as you please on that land. Otherwise, failing to be considerate of others and their right to peaceful enjoyment of public areas constitutes being a self-centered jerk.
I 100% agree about dog poo. Dog pee is a problem too. I’m not crazy about people peeing wherever they want. Dog pee presents similar problems like smell, sanitation and property damage. I don’t see how to address that problem. A dogs gotta pee and there’s not much you can do about it.
wow! sorry y’all haven’t figured out how to train your dogs not to run up on people, other dogs, or into the street. Try keeping a treat in your pocket, and get them familiar with your whistle. Practice calling them at the dog park when they are surrounded by other dogs. If they ignore you and submit to distractions, then you’re doing it wrong. Only if your dog is trained to never leave your side, should it be off leash – and yes, some people do have dogs that are THAT well behaved.
people who don’t pick up after their dogs make it harder on those that do. i’m often nagged/accosted by irritated random people while walking my dogs because they think i’m not going to pick up the doo. but i do! i do pick up the doo!
also, my dogs are peeing on your liriope or your weird little concrete wall thing because other dogs have, not because they enjoy torturing you.
I just have to point out here that in urban stream systems, fecal coliforms are often a serious water quality problem. Dog feces is a major source of these bacteria. High concentrations of fecal coliform bacteria cause streams to be listed as ‘impaired’ for recreation because they are harmful to human health. People that want to wade or fish in the stream can get sick.
Just keep in mind that it’s not just one dog that causes the problem. It’s a whole community of dogs.
Also, it’s not just areas near a stream that you have to worry about. All of our water is transported to storm drains that eventually wind up in the James River.
Cleaning up after your dog is really important for water quality! In fact signs like the one posted above are often key to community efforts to restore their local water quality.
According to an article I read a year or two ago, the major source for fecal coliform in the James are all of the Canadian Geese that don’t go back home. Too bad we can’t harvest them. We can oil their eggs to stop them from hatching.
Next in line are dairy farms upstream.
There are couple of breaks in the sewer lines on the south side of the river on Buttermilk trail that seem to constantly have a sewer smell.
I would think dogs would have to be a distant third (or more?) and only if they poo’d in the river or a direct tributary.
Dog poo makes great tomato plant fertilizer when properly composted. The feces contain about 0.7% nitrogen (N), 0.25% phosphate (P2O5) and 0.02% potash (K2O). The urine contains about 1.1% N, 0.01% P2O5 and 0.5% K2O per University of Wisconsin, Madison
“the major source for fecal coliform in the James are all of the Canadian Geese that don’t go back home.
Now that’s a subject worth discussing. I’m not surprised to learn its a major polluter. We’ve altered their natural behavior patterns, now we are reaping their harvest. There is a lot of urban wildlife that would make a good source for protein, deer, geese. I hear pigeon is quite tasty.
Honestly, isn’t it enough to say you should scoop your dog’s poop because it is yucky and people don’t like stepping in it? Does there really need to be any higher rationale?
Medicine Cabinet Tax (Page 1997/Sec. 9003/$5 bil): No longer allowable to use health savings account (HSA), flexible spending account (FSA), or health reimbursement (HRA) pre-tax dollars to purchase non-prescription, over-the-counter medicines (except insulin)
Tidbits from heath Care Bill and its not going to cover everybody..If it passes we get to pay alot of taxes before it goes into effect. You will soon be wishing you were paying that $600.00 per month for your own insurance becsue this is going to cost you alot more. check it out for yourself!!!! Oh by the way did you all know that part one of the Health Care Bill was passed buried deep in the Stimulus Bill that no one read. “The Federal Coordinationg Council for Competive Effectiveness Research a rationing board; The National Coordinator of Health Information Technology a board to tell your doctor how to treat you and if he/she doesn’t abide by these guidelines that face prison time. Is this what you voted for???
wow, carolyn, you really couldn’t find a venue more appropriate for your healthcare concerns than a discussion of the proper disposal of dog shit??? Though, on second thought, this seems the perfect place for your rant.
As a paperboy for the Times Dispatch in the 1950’s I kept a water pistol full of ammonia at my side. One squirt on the snoot, and I was never bothered again.
I live right next to the vacant lot where this picture was taken and thankful for the person who posted the sign. Firstly, I don’t own the property or get paid to maintain it. We do care for it when our time permits (cutting grass, blowing leaves, picking up trash and pulling large weeds) while always stepping in shit left by other lazy ass or poor planning dog owners. Really is it that difficult to remember to bring a few bags as you leash your dog and take them for a walk?! We have a dog and are prepared for the obvious call of nature. We watch from our window or porch as many of you decide not to be responsible dog owners or considerate neighors so please stop being a shit and pick up the poo!
I think folks should be responsible for their pet’s waste. But Carolyn, what are you talking about? Is this some kind of tea party takeover of the pick up your poo thread?
PLEASE TELL THAT TO THE PEOPLE OF MANCHESTER!!!!

Yes, cwe. I know the boy that waits at the school bus stop with my daughter is afraid of our kitten. You never know.

The law is there for a reason.

So yeah, leashes aren’t a bad idea.

Carolyn, you are posting on a blog thread about dog poop. Why don’t you find a political blog to post on?
I know we all sometimes get a bit off topic, but your post is really way WAY off topic! Matter of fact, it’s so far off topic it just makes me laugh!
wow, carolyn, you really couldn’t find a venue more appropriate for your healthcare concerns than a discussion of the proper disposal of dog shit??? Though, on second thought, this seems the perfect place for your rant.
wobobee, LOL thanks for that last sentence about the perfect place for her rant!
