Holidays in Historic Hanover Open House at St. John\’s Church

St. John’s Church has partnered with the following Road to Revolution sites: Historic Polegreen Church, Hanover Tavern, Hanover Courthouse, and Scotchtown. Events are taking place December 4-6 at these venues. Please call each site for schedules.

Visit St. John’s Church, a National Historic Landmark in recognition of being the original location of Patrick Henry’s immortal “Give me liberty or give me death!” speech. Enjoy a guided tour for $5.00 and free eggnog in the Visitor Center.

Ephraim Kaye & Eagles Over Auschwitz

On Tuesday, December 8th, Ephraim Kaye renowned Holocaust educator at Yad Vashem and director of the International School for Holocaust Studies, will be on hand at the Virginia Holocaust Museum. Beginning at 7 p.m., Mr. Kaye will discuss the historic event and film: Eagles over Auschwitz, the momentous flyover of Auschwitz-Birkenau by three Israeli Air Force F-15’s on September 4, 2003, and its significance to Survivors, soldiers and civilians alike.

Mr. Kaye has been a guest speaker and lecturer in many different Holocaust centers and conferences throughout the world – among them, Beth Shalom in England, Vilna, Lithuania, The Church and the Holocaust Scholars Conference, The AHO Conference, the Miami Holocaust Center, and the Los Angeles Holocaust Center.

17th Annual James River Parade of Lights

Always a good reason to gather on Libby Hill and appreciate the season and the view…

In 1989, Harvey Price, then the dock master at Kingsland Reach Marina in Henrico County, decided to decorate his boat and cruise the James. Many other boaters laughed at him, but when they saw how much fun Mr. Price was having and how much people along the river appreciated his efforts, they decided to join him. In 1992, the James River Advisory Council (then called the James River Task Force) approached the boaters with the idea that the parade could be a yearly holiday event, and the official James River Parade of Lights was born. Over the years, the parade has grown, and today features official viewing sites in multiple localities. Thousands throughout the region now consider the parade a cherished holiday tradition.

Entry criteria: Powered boat capable of moving 7 knots

Parade distance: 14-mile parade route from City of Richmond to Varina-Enon Bridge

Time of the Parade: Boats gather at 5:45 p.m. (6 p.m. countdown for illumination). Parade lasts until approximately 8:30 p.m.

Friends and Neighbors: Please join us for the annual holiday tree decorating at the White Pine, near the Bandstand.

You might ask – What can I bring?

1. A decoration(s) to put on the tree.
2. A string or two of white lights.
3. Your own personal cup of java, cocoa or hot tea.
4. Some goodies to share…cake, cookie or pastry.
5. An 8 foot ladder to reach the lamp posts.
6. Red Bows- for the park lamp posts.

But mostly bring yourself to share in this neighborhood tradition of decorating the beautiful Virginia White Pine in Union Hill.
