17th Annual James River Parade of Lights

Always a good reason to gather on Libby Hill and appreciate the season and the view…

In 1989, Harvey Price, then the dock master at Kingsland Reach Marina in Henrico County, decided to decorate his boat and cruise the James. Many other boaters laughed at him, but when they saw how much fun Mr. Price was having and how much people along the river appreciated his efforts, they decided to join him. In 1992, the James River Advisory Council (then called the James River Task Force) approached the boaters with the idea that the parade could be a yearly holiday event, and the official James River Parade of Lights was born. Over the years, the parade has grown, and today features official viewing sites in multiple localities. Thousands throughout the region now consider the parade a cherished holiday tradition.

Entry criteria: Powered boat capable of moving 7 knots

Parade distance: 14-mile parade route from City of Richmond to Varina-Enon Bridge

Time of the Parade: Boats gather at 5:45 p.m. (6 p.m. countdown for illumination). Parade lasts until approximately 8:30 p.m.

7th District Meeting

Richmond City Councilwoman Cynthia I. Newbille, East End 7th District will hold a meeting in the East End 7th District, her first individual meeting since being elected. The meeting will be held on December 12 from 10:30AM-noon at the EDI building at 25th and M Street.

Annual holiday tree decorating at Jefferson Park

Friends and Neighbors: Please join us for the annual holiday tree decorating at the White Pine, near the Bandstand.

You might ask – What can I bring?

1. A decoration(s) to put on the tree.
2. A string or two of white lights.
3. Your own personal cup of java, cocoa or hot tea.
4. Some goodies to share…cake, cookie or pastry.
5. An 8 foot ladder to reach the lamp posts.
6. Red Bows- for the park lamp posts.

But mostly bring yourself to share in this neighborhood tradition of decorating the beautiful Virginia White Pine
in Union Hill.

Church Hill Historic House Tour

The 1800’s come alive this year as Church Hill opens the doors of eight beautifully appointed nineteenth century homes. Many of these architecturally significant houses have
never been open to the public, several are pre civil war, and all are handsomely decorated for the holidays. Stroll these historic streets with Victorian carolers, while horse drawn
carriages clip-clop by. The Park House in Libby Hill Park will host a gallery display of over 25 framed posters from years past – with this year’s poster available for sale.

Church Hill Holiday Ball

Court End Christmas at St. John’s Church

Court End Christmas is an annual Richmond tradition to celebrate the coming holiday. Please contact Valentine Richmond History Center at 804.649.0711 for more information.

St. John’s Church will have the following schedule:

1:00 p.m. – 1:45 p.m.: Reenactment of the Second Virginia Convention of March 1775, where Patrick Henry uttered the immortal words, “Give me liberty or give me death!” Seating begins at 12:30pm.

2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m.: An Afternoon with Eliza Poe – Weather permitting, the performance will take place outside in the churchyard near Mrs. Poe’s grave memorial. Visitors are allowed to bring seating.

2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.: Costumed interpreters in the church

5:00 p.m.: Virginia Girls Choir

All events are FREE and open to the public.

City Council Formal Meeting

Every 2nd and 4th Mon – Responsible for deciding official Council action, which includes discussing, adopting, rejecting, and amending laws and approving the budget. Formal meetings include a time for pubic comment and are televised live on the local PBS station and are replayed in Richmond on Government Access Channel 17, beginning at Noon and 7:00 p.m. daily.
