Urban Book Club takes up Monster at East End Library
12/26/2009 12:46 PM by John M
DTLR and the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation are coming back to the East End Library for their second Urban Book Club discussion. These two generous organizations will be providing free copies of Walter Dean Myers’ Monster, DTLR staff to facilitate the discussion, plus free pizza! The books will be availabe at the East End Library after Dec.29 (while they last) and the Book Club Meeting will take place Wed. Jan.27 at 4PM.
The 3 rules of participation are:
- That you return to be a part of the discussion if you take a copy of the book, even if you haven’t finished it;
- Everything said in the book club stays in the book club; and,
- There are no stupid or silly questions or comments.
This is a great thing. I went with 5 teens from the Boys and Girls Club on R street, and they all really enjoyed it. In fact, they talked more about what took place than the pizza (though the pizza got a couple in the door.)
DTLR does a great job engaging the teens, and the books they choose are both interesting to the teens and relevant. As a community, we want to make sure we support this book club, so that it continues to thrive in Richmond, and in OUR library!
