Going out of business sale at Church Hill Herbs
03/01/2010 6:40 AM by John M
Carolyn at Church Hill Herbs sends in word that she is closing shop:
I am closing the shop… most everything is 50% off, gift merchandise and 40% off on wine. We have desks, file cabinets and shelving that is priced separately. Store closes March 15th.
Sorry to see the shop go but my budget didn’t allow me to buy flowers as much as I wished.
Its good that she is closing. She doesn’t know how to talk to people and she has made racist comments over the years.
I thought she had already gone out of business – like last year. There just wasn’t a big enough market in this neighborhood for the type of merchandise she sold. But, I wish her good luck in any future endeavors.
Hey Alicia….exactly what racist comments were made?
I’m betting that you just made that up because….for some reason….you don’t like her. A neighborhood small business closing is definitely not “good”. You keeping your racist made up comments to yourself would be.
I’m sorry to hear this for Carolyn’s sake, but think that her business was never quite right for this neighborhood. Perhaps someone will move into the property with one that is. At any rate, I wish her luck in the future.
I hope the owners of the building will fix the problems with the building…like a leaking roof and stucco falling off seem to show signs of major issues.
This is sad, but honestly, it doesn’t suprise me. I made 3 attempts to go to the shop during normal business hours and it was always closed. I gave up. Not to mention it’s not open past 5 pm…which doesn’t help people that have normal 9-5 jobs.
Sorry to see the shop close. It was a great place to shop for gifts and Carolyn’s flower arrangements were beautiful. Let’s hope she has another venture in her plans. Best of luck, Carolyn!
hey christo the neighborhood residents stated she doesn’t like black people or people in poverty.so u continue to like her because that it not acceptable in our eyes.
Any good deals on wine (does she only sell expensive stuff or a bit of everything?)?
Wine she had wide price point… starting around $8 to upper… but still 40% off?? good deal.. had Horton wines…
PETS AT PLAY, will more then likely be buying this building. Its that wonderful. I’m really excited for her company.
and for Alicia, i’ve never heard any racist comments, however I do personally feel she does not have the best personality in the world.
Alicia,
“The neighborhood residents”? Kind of vague don’t you think? If you’re going to be throwing out accusations like that perhaps you should be a little less vague.
Regardless of her personal views, however, it’s not good to see a small neighborhood busness go under.
I thought she made lovely arrangements and wish her the best of luck.
I am with Alicia…I remember how the owner used to stand out front and yell “Hey you @#** come buy some #@%** flowers or else”
RE: #14 – That just made me laugh. Out loud.
Gordo #14 I find that extremely hard to believe; not only would it be totally out of character, but she didn’t have *time* to stand outside when she signed up with FTD, she was running all over town making floral deliveries.
If she had done anything remotely like that, it would have been all over the neighborhood in no time. Furthermore, she and her husband have lived way north of Broad Street for a very long time – hardly a locale for someone with racist views!
Will you and Alicia please stop making things up! The loss of a small neighborhood business IS a sad thing. Kindly find someone who truly is a racist to accuse of such things, thank you. Start with Strom Thurmond and work from there. You might have more credibility then.
Thanks for the call to sanity, crd. Made me realize that I should qualify that I don’t know this lady, but the idea of anyone doing that about flowers sounds like Candid Camera to me. That’s what I thought was funny.
Buy some flowers!! Or else!!! I’m gonna go write a song about that now.
Shannon #17, looking forward to your song!
I think Gordo was joking. I hope Gordo was joking.

*Your heads*
She wasn’t what I’d call a warm person, at least in my experience, but maybe she was just having a bad day every single time I went in there. Her surliness didn’t seem to jive with the whole gift/flower shop idea. Again, just my experience.
Flowers or else – very funny!
I know nothing about this woman, but in fairness to her you don’t find many warm and fuzzy people in ANY business that caters to the public these days.
I got publicly chastised by a clerk in a 7-11 last week because I wanted to give her 2 pennies instead of getting back 3 for a $1.57 purchase.
The problem this woman apparently had is that she didn’t realize she was selling (unlike 7-11 coffee) a non-essential item.
When you’re trying to foist something of marginal or zero value on the unsuspecting public to begin with, you really need to suck it in and suck it up no matter how much you might hate doing it.
I “put up” with that woman in 7-11 and will shop there again because I like her coffee and don’t give a hoot if she has an attitude or not, but I dang sure would NOT be buying flowers (or “herbs” so-called) from someone who treats me like dirt.
#22 – I have a friend who just said almost exactly the same thing to me as what you’ve just posted, regarding the owner of the herb shop. We both know her, BTW.
He tried very hard to support her in the early days of the shop, but he doesn’t buy flowers. However, he does buy a particular herbal supplement, and she was carrying the product line but not his particular product. When he told her that he’d like her to order it and he’d buy it every month, she told him to go order it online, that she didn’t have it.
He patiently explained that he wanted her to order it – and she flatly refused. Apparently she didn’t like that product, so refused to carry it – but the public (or one member of it) wanted it! You can’t do retail in these days without catering to your customers – or, as you said, “you really need to suck it in and suck it up no matter how much you might hate doing it.”
I had a similar experience recently at a high end pet supply store in Carytown. I’d been buying cat litter there. Went in to get more, they were out, and when I asked, the guy at the counter said ‘oh I don’t know when we’ll get it in. Next week, I guess.’ I looked at him and said, that’s the end of my shopping here, now I have to go to another store. Went into Ukrops and discovered almost the same product for half the cost! So much for the high end place – if they can’t be bothered to stock what I’m buying, on a regular basis every two weeks, I’ll take my business elsewhere.
Add to that the current economy and I’m not surprised Caroline’s closing. She’s been trying for years, but we just don’t have the critical mass up here to support selling a lot of flowers week after week. I wish the other businesses well – including a new trinket store that seems to have opened down at 25th & Franklin, along with Pets at Play and the CH Vet. Hopefully they’ve got enough traffic to keep them going through hard times.
hello we are building a ministries and would like to kown if you have any furniture that you would like to give away God Bless
