Echo Harbor still moving along

A small piece on the Style Weekly website gives some updates on Echo Harbor:
Theobald and developer Ross presented the project to downtown boosters Venture Richmond on April 9 and have been making the rounds trying to drum up support among civic groups. According to city planning staff, under a standard timeline City Council would introduce the project’s permit April 26. The Planning Commission would hear the proposal May 17 before sending it back to City Council the following week for approval.
I admire their tenacity. I don’t like it but I admire it.
Hope they have to include plans for public river access. Just got stopped for trying to walk along the river near Rockett’s Landing – hoping it doesn’t happen again!
I like the whole project. It brings new life to the East End.
The plans indicate a public “promenade” all along the waterfront area. This will be especially important to the restaurants and ground floor retailer businesses that rely on foot traffic.
Marshall #2, Rockett’s is private property, as you’ve just discovered. What gets me is people who say, well the Boathouse restaurant is there and therefore the riverfront is public access, which simply isn’t true. As you now have first hand knowledge, the riverfront at Rockett’s is not open to the general public. I know someone else who recently groused about the same thing.
#4 Libby Hill Res – does that mean that there will be public boat access to and from that promenade?
#4 Libby Hill Res – while I still would like to have my question in #6 answered, I have another – if the promenade along the waterfront is public, will the public be able to access the river from it to go sunbathing and swimming the way they can at Belle Isle? On a weekend in the summer, take some beer, laze at the river, maybe float around in a tube – but not have to go all the way to Belle Isle, since the Echo Harbor promenade is right there at the foot of Church Hill?
crd, you mean swim and sunbathe in the combined sewer overflow?
I don’t know if the “sea wall” dock there will be rental spaces or short term tie up spaces for the day visitor.
I personally don’t see too many people boating up the James from the bay simply to do a “day trip”. Do the math. 10-15 mph boat and a 60-90 mile trip?
Any public or private dock I have visited charges a slip fee if I do more than buy fuel. (i.e. Waterside in Norfolk)
Have you noted the restrictions on the Canal’s use? No bikes, no boats or canoes, no fishing, no tubing (no fun?).
