Car launches off of Libby Terrace
05/15/2010 11:07 PM by John M
A car lies flipped halfway down the hill and firefighters work to rescue at least one person after the vehicle launched off of Libby Terrace just east of the fountain.
As Merle Haggard would say, “Now how them Duke boys gonna get them out of this situation?”
well at least now my family found out why there was so much noise around our house! were they okay? how did this happen?
HOLY MOLY, how the heck do you do that!!!
According to neighbors at the scene this morning, the car came off of Libby Terrace just west of the large tree at the sidewalk, hitting a parked car in the process. The vehicle continued at an angle until it hit the retaining wall over by the old road. There is still debris along the wall at that point. It looks like the car followed the road down the hill, but kept going straight where the road stops and jumped the hill.
Church Hill gets all the exciting incidents!
Anyone got any idea what caused this – heart attack for driver, stuck accelerator, police chase? And who was it? I’m on the phone with someone who lives on Libby Terrace, slept thru the incident last night but has talked to neighbors this morning. He says from what they could see in the grass today, and my description of John M’s map here, the map is spot on with the route the car must have taken.
I think that the general rule is that one should not drive over the edge . . . of ANYTHING!
The Times-Dispatch is reporting that the driver died.

I believe this was a fatality.
According to the RTD, “A single-vehicle crash last night claimed the life of the driver.
Richmond police said that a vehicle overturned around 11 p.m. in Libby Hill Park, near Williamsburg Road and East Main Street. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police are withholding the identity of the driver pending notification of next of kin…”
John M., don’t know how you managed to be on the scene so quickly, but the story and photos are very informative. Very sorry the story has such a sad ending.
I was at Libby Hill Park today at the site and had no clue until someone told me. So sad.
