A few highlights from the June 22 inspection of Sandra’s Soul Food by the Department of Health:
Observed an employee smoking in areas where they may contaminate food, clean equipment, utensils or other items needing protection. Pig feet, collard and yams noted not being adequately cooled to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. During Inspection Improper methods used to thaw chicken. Outer opening of the food establishment is not protected against entry of insects and rodents. The refrigerator was observed in a state of disrepair. The floor in the kitchen noted in need of cleaning.
Naaassssty! But, I’m not surprised.
Yum, yum!
Where is Sandra’s located? Sounds like my kind of place.
Way to nasty for me to eat there! Sorry…but I’ll have to pass!
#3 It’s located at 1800 Fairmount Ave., according to Health Dept. website. They got 6 critical and 5 non-critical violations during this inspection.
Sandra’s is at the northeast corner of the intersection of Mosby Street/Mechanicsville Turnpike and Fairmount Ave.
Thanks, Lora, I could visualize where it was but didn’t remember the exact names of the streets at that intersection!
To those who are interested, if you look at the Health Dept. website for restaurant inspections, this one is really bad but I’ve seen others with many critical violations up here on the hill. Here’s a link that I think will work, go down the left side and click on Restaurant Inspections, then you have to choose Richmond City, from there it’s pretty easy to look up different establishments. If the link doesn’t work, google Virginia Dept. of Health and go from there. Sort of interesting to look at…

For the record, Restaurant Report featured Big John’s Grill on Venable Street earlier this year for a more pleasant reason — they racked up four perfect inspections in a row. Mr. Pettaway, the owner, said, “I like cleanliness, myself.”

Other recent local perfect scores also include the Black Tie Social Club on Nine Mile and the Church’s Chicken on Mechanicsville.
while you are looking to cherry pick sandras take a look at all the “uptown violations”. the h.d.s job is to look for violations and trust me nobody that works there is letting anybody get away with anything as the inspectors are in part judged on job performance. chances are many of your favorite cork sniffin, high falutin places have had runins with the food cops.thats why its a big deal to get a perfect score.were the violations corrected. if so why no mention. once again mindless nabobs of negativism will only use the facts that fit their prejudices. big surprise.buddycorbett
