Scooter stolen from Sette, thieves flee to Fairfield

A scooter was stolen Friday night from the Sette parking lot (photo above). The owner of the scooter pursued the thieves and passed this on:
At 10:35 p.m.two black males ages 14-16, one riding a yellow scooter (50 cc) and another on the stolen scooter (Velocity 150 cc) in route to 23rd and Fairfield Way. They jumped a curb in Fairfield Court and got away.
This is really getting ridiculous.
once again lock your shit up!!! any type of moped/scooter are subject to getting stolen…doesnt matter if you use keys to start your moped/scooter..its not rocket science on how to hot wire them

Just this past Thursday, I left my bike (3rd-hand used but steadfast companion) on my front porch in broad daylight for 5-minutes while i ran inside to change clothes. Usually, I lug it around back and lock it up. But since I was gonna be inside for just a few minutes…yeah, right. It only took 10 seconds for somebody to jump up on my front porch, and run off with my bike…in daylight with people walking their dogs in the park across the street!
FYI: it’s a well-worn Diamond Back mountain bike, gray/silver frame, 15-speed with a busted front derailleur. Black seat and pouch, worn black handle grips. Black cable lock wrapped around the seat post/cross bar. Call RPD @ 646-5100 if you see it…thanks.
This is getting out of control. I personally know of 5 people who have been a victim of theft in the Hill in the past several weeks. What do we do about this? Are the police planning to patrol the area more? Do they care or think of these as petty crimes? I’m disgusted by this.
This town needs bait bikes. GPS tracked and activated by motion, during a short window of time the “trap” bike can be located and a warrant can be issued for search. Once inside the police can retrieve any other stolen property, drugs, etc., and arrest those involved.

@ Casey – do they care? Are you kidding me? Do you even realize how stretched thin our police department is? My husband has worked a ten hour shift and two 16 hour shifts in three days. There are shootings almost every day and when you are stretched thin in staffing already, you have to have your resources prioritized. Please don’t turn this increase in scooter/biker thefts into a slam on the police department.
Is there any way a separate blog can be started to make it easier for those of us in the neighborhood to watch out for these scooters and bicycles? Which ones have been recovered and which ones are still missing (with pictures?). I don’t own these items, so I don’t know, for example, what a Velocity 150 cc scooter or a Diamond Back bike looks like. I remember on another thread regarding stolen scooters, one was described as “yellow and black checkered” (I have spotted three of these in the past ten days around the Hill and the Bottom, different drivers) and one was described as “bubble gum” pink. I saw one like that on Williamsburg Pike Saturday. A description of the proper owner or authorized riders might help too??? Seriously, I have been keeping a look out for the black rocking chairs and the sun dial at yard sales to see if they fit decriptions of what has been stolen. I’m not nosey, but I know what it feels like to be burglarized. We are in a “crime watch” neighborhood. We all need to continue to look out for one another. A bike, stolen in 10 minutes from a front porch, not cool.
yeah, you can’t really blame the police or be disgusted. well, you can be disgusted (it’s kind of fun!), but be disgusted not at present-day events. it’s what happened years ago that caused such things to happen. not to generalize or stereotype, but more than likely the kids stealing this stuff are poor and black and they don’t live in the best of homes. multiply that by several generations living the same way, and there’s your crime. it’s not that simple, of course, but the way we’re going on about being disgusted needs to be redirected, i think. this may sound like i’m apologizing for the criminals. i’m not. we just need to approach crime in our neighborhood a different way. maybe a time machine would help. go back and eliminate slavery, then segregation. but what do i know? nothing, mostly.
The creation of a separate neighborhood watch blog is a fantastic idea. Pictures of the stolen items and descriptions of their owners would be helpful.

So #9, you’re saying these kid (who are criminals by the way) are criminals because of their past…they are poor and black and that’s why they steal? No offence meant but I think that’s a bunch of BS really. Another one of those “product of society” excuses…it has nothing to do with slavery, segregation, etc. These idiots are making bad choices. I just hope they get caught and sent down the block to jail!
@Liz – My post was not meant to be a slam of the RPD. I’m sorry that is what you took away from it. My dealings with the RPD have always been positive and I have no issue with the RPD and what they do in our community. I just hope they increase patrols in the areas getting hit the hardest. This has been frustrating for myself and many of my neighbors.
Good News! The scooter was recovered. It was found behind an abandoned house. Thanks to all that kept an eye out for it.
#10 & #8, we don’t really need a whole new blog in my opinion, just maybe a separate thread on THIS blog. I agree, pictures and who to contact would be a good idea – sort of aggregate all of it on another thread. Problem I see with that is people commenting on stuff, I think it needs to stay clean with just pics, contact info, and postings of possible places people have seen the stuff, leave the social commentary (that we all love) off of that particular thread. Just my thoughts.
Continuing my post, or maybe another category – there are ‘classifieds’ and ‘contact’ and ‘calendar’ categories – John, could you do a category that lists stolen stuff? And somehow restrict it to only postings of possible sites where the stuff was seen? I’m kind of thinking out loud here…
Put a hidden fuel cut off on the fuel line or a second ignition kill that shunts the plug wire. It won’t go far without fuel or a spark. Both require almost no mechanical knowledge.

FYI… For those that have stolen scooters that have not been recovered, check Seibert’s towing. The scooter in the picture above was found behind an abandoned house and towed to Seibert’s. The owner paid to get it back but was grateful nothing was wrong with it. He said there were alot of unclaimed scooters on the lot. Hope this helps.

Worth noting: don’t pay the daily storage @ seibert’s—-they’ll usually negotiate for a way lower rate.
Have any of the thieves that have stolen any of the scooters actually been identified and charged?
Does anyone know?
If no one ever actually goes to jail for this, there is absolutely no deterrent.
