The Broad Street mummy house?
08/05/2010 4:10 PM by John M
We’ve received word that the RRHA-owned house at 30th and Broad may soon be totally encased in plastic:
Today two very sympathetic workman showed up TO SHRINK-WRAP THE HOUSE. They said they’ve been asked to literally wrap the entire house in plastic!! The house is being WRAPPED UP RATHER THAN WORKED ON. There are no known plans to actually do anything with the house once it’s been encased in its wrapper.
The strangest things happen in CH.
Why would they shrink wrap the house? Is there a reason for this other than to make it and the entire block look terrible?
This reminds me of that astonishingly ugly house in Carytown on Colonial Avenue that the city allowed to be encased in plywood for many years before it was finally, mercifully, torn down. Now, of course, it is just a trash-blown vacant lot.
What a waste, but hardly the first in Big R.
I’m guessing that this could be done because of the peeling paint and other exterior code violations.
Oh come on RRHA… sell it so someone can restore it and someone can call it home.
From the RRHA site: “The Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority (RRHA) was founded October 3, 1940, under the Virginia Housing Authority Law of 1938 by the Richmond City Council as the official agency charged with the responsibility of eliminating blight and developing affordable housing in the city of Richmond.”
Wrapping a house in plastic is contributing to blight! If the house isn’t going to be put to use, sell it.
It looks like a neat house. I hope there are good plans in the works for it (and I don’t consider shrink-wrapping it “good plans”). I’m sorry for the neighbors who have to look at the eyesore…
Could be they are going to gas it for powder post beetles.
can you imagine the amount of mold that will grow on and inside this house if it’s wrapped in plastic? you know it won’t be water tight. ugh. it’ll be the “green moldy rotten house” in a few short months.
I am betting this is some sort of knee jerk reaction to the EPA rrp lead regs that came into effect this april. I know lead paint is not the happiest thing in the world, but wrapping a house in plastic is crazy.
Good point Elaine.
who’s gonna be the first to take a box cutter to the plastic? House liberation?
I hope they checked for squatters before they sealed the tomb.
Only in Church Hill. That’s a shame because that’s a nice looking stretch of Broad. I was hoping that house was prepping for a rehab.
As neighbors who care about this neighborhood, let’s try to do something about this. Should we all start calling RRHA about it or is there someone else we should contact? Maybe the mayors office?
Maybe they’re shrink-wrapping it in plastic that has a pretty, renovated house printed on the outside.
Well, maybe they’re trying to keep it fresh. Maybe a giant refrigerator will come along and gobble it up. Then the eyesore will be gone…
RRHA sold this house on 10/18/2010 to KINGS CREST LLC. There are two permits out to do work on the house: #B10113024 and #V11011202.
Yay! I saw people out there working last week and assumed it was the city. I wish them much success. It’s going to be lovely.
