New stoplights coming to problem intersection
12/13/2010 12:54 PM by John M
An email from Enrique Burgos of the city’s Transportation Engineering Division says that new lights are coming to the intersection of 25th and Leigh Streets (the frequent location of fairly serious car accidents):
As a temporary solution, we are going to be changing the existing 8” signal heads to 12”. The new signal heads will be also LED, which are brighter than the existing incandescent bulbs in this intersection. Also, warning signs alerting the signal ahead will be installed.
Our goal is to have by August 2011 a design ready to install mast arm poles with overhead signals. This will improve the safety on motorists and pedestrians.
I live on that block and there is an accident literally every other week. After yesterday’s accident my wife and I were thinking about using sidewalk chalk to draw a stop sign on the intersection, or hanging streamers on the traffic light. About damn time Richmond. Thank you Enrique.
It sounds like this will be a good thing for the neighborhood. I just hope they don’t install a huge ugly light bar like they did at 21st, Jefferson, and Marshall.
We used to have semi weekly accidents downtown at 2nd and Franklin. When they finally upgraded to the overhead signals, accidents dropped dramatically. We literally can’t remember when the last accident was. You can look forward to a little less excitement in the neighborhood going forward.
I’d love it if they’d consider a light at Broad and 23rd, too.
Stop lights are good for pedestrians, too. I’d like to see one on 30th and Broad where the kids cross to go to the playground.
Thank you Mackie Blaylock for bugging the city about this dangerous intersection! Your persistence has paid off. There is NO way anyone could miss those enormous traffic signals they just installed! They are HUGE!!!
So glad to see this! When the GRTC bus pulls over at that bus stop, you absolutely cannot see the signal (or that there even *is* a signal) until you are in the intersection. This is a major problem if the light is red!!
