Tickets for not moving cars for street cleaning that doesn’t happen
A reader writes in looking for some clarification on street cleaning and ticketing…
There are signs on 25th that tell you that you can’t park on certain mornings for street cleaning.
When we first moved here, we religiously moved our cars each night to the appropriate side of the street. We never got a ticket on those nights we forgot and street cleaning rarely happened. When it did occur, it was late at night, often between midnight and 2am (NOT the designated time we were made to move our cars.)
So, after realizing about a year in that no one was ticketing we stopped moving the cars.
Then 3.5 years later, this past summer, we see a meter person ticketing out front. He tells us a neighbor called to complain about the streets never getting cleaned. We got a ticket. We were able to get out of it, but have been moving the cars back and forth again ever since.
If you have read this far, hold on. I’m almost to the point.
Well, this morning at 7:15, they were out ticketing again, on 25th I saw them, right across from Que Pasa.
Problem is, they never cleaned the streets yesterday (or any day in recent months) and didn’t come today to clean either. Seems wrong to be driving through ticketing but not actually cleaning.
Thought you might have a way to contact someone or give me some insight in who to approach with this.
Here are some pics from 4:30 pm on Tuesday (today) after multiple people got tickets but no clean streets.
and this is what was “cleaned” yesterday at 7:15 this morning
TAGGED: 25th Street
Typical city of Richmond BS!
This sounds like something our council person should hear about , right? Surely they will come to our aid because that just ain’t right!
Three comments: First, it’s an easy revenue generator for the city. Secondly, it’s a easy revenue gernerator for towing companies. Lastly, consider yourself luck with a ticket, normally the car is towed deep down into the worst area of Southside (Hull St.), where you have to hazard your life to get fetch the car. Then after you pay ransome you can bring your car back home to park on the steet they didn’t clean. That is of course if there was no damage to your care in the towing/storing process, (which by the way is your fault & cost for not complying with the postings – Ha!, nice little catch 22 for city and towing co. !
Any wonder that people would rather live in the counties and not in the city.
At least they clean your street on a regular basis! M St (right off of 25th street) rarely, if ever gets cleaned. I tend to sweep up the leaves (and trash generated by the ghetto-mart) every few months. I should send the city a bill for my efforts. 😛
@ “reader” who started this thread: i feel your pain and have been thru similar situations with street cleaning inconsistencies.
what’s worked for me in the past, is to call public works, and drill down to the supervisor for street cleaning. talk to him/her about what’s going on (pitch an angry fit, if you feel it’ll help at this point…tell em you represent everyone on the entire block).
lastly, since this looks like a multi-departmental issue (public works and police), you may want to consider asking our council person to mediate this.
Agree with #4. My street has never been cleaned to my knowledge. The inmates do come around and pick up trash once or twice a year though.
The relationship between the the city and Seibert’s is pretty suspect, too – just while we’re at it.
“the car is towed deep down into the worst area of Southside (Hull St.), where you have to hazard your life to get the car.”
Melodramatic much?
Towing Fees – Campaign Contributions

#8 Yes, I think it is melodramatic in the extreme. Not only that, but when I took a friend over there to retrieve her car, we discovered this enormous, great thrift store in the mall near Seibert’s which sort of made the trip worth it.
We’re supposed to have weekly street cleaning in our neighborhood? Who knew?! Speaking as a resident of Union Hill, and as someone who works right around the corner from said “deep down into the worst area of Southside (Hull St.),” I can attest that it’s not that bad. I walk over there from my office frequently; the scariest thing about that part of town is the speeding traffic and lack of crosswalks and sidewalks.
Thanks, #9.
I live on 23rd at leigh. Our street is not cleaned weekly, it seems more like it is done every other month/quarterly. But, when they put the signs up, they will tow and they will clean.
These aren’t the signs that state they will come by at a certain time…these are the “No Parking Monday 7am to 9am” signs that line 25th.
I’ll send a note to our council person. I don’t even care if they clean the streets, although, it would be nice. I’m more annoyed that they come and ticket us, but for what? Because they clearly aren’t cleaning.
